Nauru records first two cases of Covid-19 in quarantine

In a public address today, President Aingimea assured the community that the two cases are safely contained in quarantine and that Nauru remains safe and there is no cause for panic.

Both persons are well and do not have any symptoms and are being cared for by the medical team at the negative pressure Covid Ward at the RON Hospital.

Two other people are also being quarantined in the Covid Ward.

One of them is the spouse of one of the cases and they had travelled together.

Nauru conducts Covid community tests

The teams will carry out community testing with Nauru Police tomorrow.

Frontline workers at the airport were the first group to undergo community testing Tuesday.

A statement said testing stations will be set-up at the Government Office next week for the public service.

The public is encouraged to make time available time to attend the testing station that is applicable to you.

South Korea’s new ambassador presents credentials to Nauru’s President

Young-kyu Park is the new Ambassador Extraordinary Plenipotentiary of South Korean to Nauru, succeeding Shinhee Cho.

“The Republic of Nauru and the Republic of Korea share a longstanding relation based on common interests,” President Aingimea said.

“I especially wish to take this opportunity to express the government’s appreciation for the COVID-19 assistance rendered by your country to Nauru through UNICEF for medical items.”

Australia signs Direct Funding Agreements with Nauru for education and health

Managed by the Department of Finance, the DFAs aim to support Nauru in terms of health and education amongst other priorities in departments such as the Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) and Women’s and Social Development Affairs (WASDA).

Hodges said he is pleased that Australia is able to assist Nauru to address some key issues through a long-term strategy.

Nauru being overrun with car imports

The Transport Minister Martin Hunt has told parliament that this is causing road congestion and wasting land.

He said the island, with a population of about 11,000 and few roads, has more than 5,000 registered vehicles, and many unregistered.

Mr Hunt said the surplus of vehicles, including motorcycles, will also cause environmental damage.

New bus schedules are being worked on to encourage people to use public transport.

New patrol boats due to arrive in Nauru in May

Ambassador to Taiwan Jarden Kephas received the boats on behalf of the Government of Nauru and Nauru Police Force in Taiwan on March 7.

Nauru Media News – NTV reports the police force will establish a Maritime Division under the Operations Unit and will recruit officers.

The relevant officers in the NPF and other departments will be trained to operate the patrol boats.

The boats have been named Eaimer and Tebaurua.

The patrol boats will play a major role in safeguarding Nauru’s sea especially for any illegal activities and search and rescue.

     

Nauru passengers return negative Covid results

A statement said the initial test results suggested shedding from old infection but this needed further testing to confirm.

The passengers had no known past Covid infection and had been well and asymptomatic. All previous tests taken before their travel were all negative.

President Lionel Aingimea also travelled on the same flight.

The presidential delegation all returned negative PCR tests results on Friday.

Higher Ground Initiative (HGI) Steering Committee meets with HoD’s and Chairs of SOE’s

It was the first time that the HGI Select Committee invited other HoD’s and Chairs of SOEs to an HGI meeting.

HGI was launched in 2019 to accelerate the rehabilitation of mined out land in preparation for habitation. HGI takes on greater urgency due to the impacts of climate change, most notably sea level rise, which could threaten many low-lying coastal areas of the island over the next several decades.

Australia pledges $40m for Nauru infrastructure upgrades

The funding will support the re-surfacing of Nauru’s runway and the provision of vital air traffic equipment to enable critical air transport services for decades to come.

It will also enable climate-resilient upgrades to sections of the Nauru ring road.

A joint statement said the project will employ Nauruan workers and use local materials where possible, to help stimulate Nauru’s economy.

Senator Payne announced the assistance after she met with the President of Nauru Lionel Aingimea in Sydney yesterday.

Nauru hosts Table Tennis competition to celebrate 54th Independence Day anniversary

The tournament commemorates the nation’s 54th Independence Day anniversary.

Nauru Media News reports competition for Under 12, Under 16 and open men’s and women’s will be held at the sports complex.

The tournament is sponsored by the Government with Nauru Table Tennis organising and running the event.
