Cook Islanders get ready to go to the polls

Voters will have four parties, and a movement calling for a collegial approach to government, to choose from.

Cook Islands politics has been dominated for years by the Cook Islands Party led by the current Prime Minister Mark Brown - a man who is very confident of holding on to power.

He believes his government has done a very good job keeping the country together in very trying circumstances over the past two or so years.

There are 69 candidates in all contesting the poll, and one, marine scientist Teina Rongo, hopes this election will be third time lucky for him.

Nauru Secondary School students elect prefects

After training conducted by Nauru Election Commission officials on Thursday May 5, the election conducted by NSS followed the election and voting process of a national general election with election officials with presiding officers from year 11 conducting the election and the counting.

Nauru Media News reports it was great to see the children listening to and following instructions given by the election officials.

Year levels commencing from year 9 to 12 cast their votes using a pink a blue ballot paper which represented the boys and girls.

Nauru Electoral Commissioner orders recount for Ubenide constituency

The recount was ordered by Electoral Commissioner, Joseph Cain.

According to a statement, the ballot papers were found following the first count.

However, there is no explanation for the sudden appearance of the six ballot papers.

The Ubenide electorate provides four of Nauru's 19 MPs.

David Adeang, who was Finance Minister in the previous government, was the highest polling of the four winning candidates, with a margin of 103 votes over second placed Russ Kun.

 

Two women elected in Nauru Parliament election

President for the last six years, Baron Waqa has lost his bid to be re-elected to Parliament.

Charmaine Scotty, who was Education Minister in the Waqa-led government and Isabelle Dageago are the two women in the new Parliament.

Waqa contested his Boe constituency with four other candidates in the election on Saturday, 24 August 2019.

Asterio Appi and Martin Hunt were the two candidates elected from Boe.

David Adeang, who was Minister for Finance and Justice, has also been re-elected to parliament.

Fresh attempt today to elect New Caledonia president

The French territory has had a caretaker administration since August.

The French High Commissioner Thierry Lataste has summoned the new government ministers to elect a president in order to give New Caledonia a properly constituted government ahead of key referendum talks in Paris next week.

The only candidate so far, Philippe Germain, has been unsuccessful in getting majority support from the 11-member government.

Did Justin Timberlake break a law while voting?

While the pop star lives in California, he flew home to Tennessee to take advantage of early voting in his hometown of Memphis.

Timberlake, who also owns property in Nashville, wasn't wearing a "Suit & Tie," but he still looked pretty adorable in the selfie he posted on Instagram of him about to cast his ballot Monday.

"Hey! You! Yeah, YOU! I just flew from LA to Memphis to #rockthevote !!! No excuses, my good people!," the singer/actor wrote in his post. "There could be early voting in your town too. If not, November 8th! Choose to have a voice!"
