UN partners with Government of Nauru

The UN has directly contributed about USD4.16 million to programmes and projects in Nauru in the current programme period 2013-2017 and also makes significant contributions to regional activities throughout the Pacific.

“The Pacific Strategy will be the high-level guiding document for UN initiatives in the region until 2022 so we want to make sure it responds to the needs of our partners and helps to achieve sustainable development outcomes that really make a difference to communities,” said Lubrani.                     

Popular Bollywood singer to perform in Nauru

The group will present a music show with dancers and musicians at Centennial Hall in Aiwo District.

Goyal’s repertoire contains films famous songs from Indian cinema and music written by her as well.

The Bollywood concert is part of strengthening ties between Republic of Nauru and the Government of India.

India and Nauru have established bilateral relations since the island nation’s independence in 1968. 

 

     

Nauru's Waqa accuses media of distortion

RNZ reports Baron Waqa accused the foreign media of using Nauru as a punching bag.

The President's comments, in an article in the Australian newspaper, came two weeks after the publication of more than 2,000 reports of abuse or mistreatment of inmates in the Australian-run detention centre on the island.

This was preceded by a review conducted by Amnesty International that graphically detailed the extent of the abuse and ill treatment.

But Mr Waqa said Nauru hosted the refugees and asylum seekers with compassion, understanding and professionalism.

Sparta team wins dart competition

They played double to win $500 cash prize.

More than 20 teams took part in the dart competition.

The evening included a singing competition which was won by Gabilene Togoran.

She won $100 cash.

Nauru Ridge to Reef; Connecting People Livelihoods and Environment Awareness Campaign

The project has consulted community members in the five selected districts, Ijuw, Meneng, Anibare, Anabar and Buada however the result does not reflect or capture perception of a wider audience of different age groups. To encompass a more representation of what the people see their environment the project is conducting arts activities; a poster contest and logo challenge as a tool to express perceptions, values visualizing the relationship, linkages, interaction between people, culture and environment.

Nauru medical students graduated from Cuba in Kiribati for internship

A Memorandum of Understanding has been signed by the Kiribati Health Secretary Dr Teatao Tiira and Nauru’s Health Secretary Rayong Itsimaere on 04 July on Tarawa.

Nauru will be the second country after Tuvalu to send in its graduating medical students to Kiribati for internship training with KITP.

In 2014, Kiribati established its own internship training programme for medical students and has been operating since then with the assistance of the Australian and New Zealand governments and the Fiji National University’s College of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences.

The VR unit has proved a BIG hit with customers with young and old experiencing a Virtual Reality World.

MPs sworn in as assistant ministers in Nauru

The seven appointed assistant ministers were called upon to step forward to take the Oath before Registrar of the Supreme Court Filimone Jitoko at the ceremony in front of the government office.

President Baron Waqa said this is “an historic day for the Republic” and one that will “ensure that Government businesses are addressed adequately, efficiently and competently.”

Elected members for Nauru elections 2016

Seven of the eight constituencies cast their vote on 9 July except for Aiwo which had its polling postponed until yesterday (11 Jul).

The Electoral Commissioner Joseph Cain declared the following candidates as elected members for their respective constituencies.
