Australia rejects Amnesty's torture claim on Nauru

Australia transports asylum seekers who arrive by boat to off-shore processing centres in Nauru and Papua New Guinea.

An Amnesty International report said this was a "deliberate policy to inflict harm on refugees" and imposes conditions that "amount to torture".

Nauru has previously denied claims of abuse at the refugee centre.

Australia has been repeatedly criticised for its tough policy on refugees and asylum seekers.

The wedding last Friday was the most talked about event on the island.

Families and friends of the Tsiode twins and their bridegrooms converged at Orro Church in Aiwo eager to be a part of the historical event.

Guests were not disappointed in what many said was a beautiful ceremony filled with love, joy, happiness and a few tears shed here and there.

The wedding was supposed to take place on Wednesday, September 28.

However, in the midst of preparations, April Ann, who was nine months pregnant went into labour and gave birth to a healthy baby girl.

Nauru to Commemorate World Mental Health Awareness Day

The programme begins at 8.30am tomorrow (Saturday) with the opening of tents for infirmation sessions on mental health at the Centennial Hall.

Activities like limbo dancing, face painting and puppet making have been organised for children while adults will be able to participate in yoga, guitar music sessions and a darts competition.

Volleyball has been scheduled from 3pm at the Location Courts.

A prize giving ceremony will be held on Monday afternoon at Centennial Hall from 3pm.

The theme for this year’s event is ‘Let’s Talk Psychological First Aid.’

New partnership enables affordable insurance for low income earners

BIMA, a world-leading mobile micro-insurance provider, and the Pacific Financial Inclusion Programme (PFIP) have launched their second major joint initiative that will provide microinsurance products to underserved communities across five Pacific Island Countries.

PFIP has provided a grant to BIMA to bring simple, affordable microinsurance products to low-income, rural and underserved communities in Fiji, Vanuatu, Tonga, Samoa and Nauru.

Taiwan medical mobile mission to visit Nauru

The team will be visiting from 2nd - 12th of October 2016 and will be based at the hospital.

Team members consist of cardiovascular surgeon, pulmonologist, registered nurse and medical technologist.

Nauru adopts New York Declaration

The Declaration was the outcome of a High-Level Meeting on the topic Monday, September 19, 2016 in New York, right before the opening of annual debate of the United Nation General Assembly.

President Baron Waqa welcomed the Declaration in his address to the Assembly, praising the support from Heads of State and High-Level Officials for the plights of refugees and migrants.

Russia, Nauru sign visa-free travel deal

Russia’s Itar-Tass news agency reports the deal was sealed by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Nauru’s President Baron Waqa.

Nauru, an island of 21 square kilometres with a population of about 11,000, gained independence in 1968 and joined the United Nations in 1999 as the world's smallest independent republic.

Nauru Youths Celebrate Youth Day

The events have been organised by Nauru National Youth Council.

National Youth Day is celebrated annually on September 25.

Sports such as Basketball, Volleyball, Tennis, Table Tennis, Softball and an Around the Island Relay will be held this week.

There are cash prizes for Winners and Runners Up.

Winners will receive $200 and Runners Up will receive $100.
