Forum and Commonwealth will observe Nauru elections

The team from the Forum will comprise three representatives from Forum Member states and two Forum Secretariat staff.

The Commonwealth team will comprise three observers and two staff members.

The electoral observer mission will arrive on Nauru a week prior to polling day and will remain until official results are announced.

1 July a Special Holiday for Nauru Public Service

A government gazette says the special holiday will be observed by the officers and employees of the Public Service and its instrumentalities in commemoration of the “Handover of the Phosphate Industry from Colonial Powers to Nauru.”

The gazette is dated 28 June, 2016.  

     

Smaller Island States adopts new strategy

The strategy will see Nauru, the Cook Islands, Kiribati, ‎‎Niue, ‎Palau, The Republic of the ‎Marshall Islands, and ‎Tuvalu working together to ensure mutual benefit and improved development outcomes.

“This is a very important strategy for the Smaller Island States. We want sustainable development for our people and for the SIS to collectively play a dynamic role in shaping the direction of development in the broader Pacific region,” said the President of Palau and meeting Chair, His Excellency Tommy E. Remengesau Jr.

Small Island States gather In Palau for Inaugural Meeting

Palau Minister of State Billy Kuartei said that this is the first meeting of the group outside of the Pacific Islands Forum Leaders’ Meeting and the gathering here was the agreement made in Papua New Guinea last year.

"As small islands states they are the most vulnerable so as a group they want to consolidate their top priorities to present to the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) and the world,” Kuartei stated.

The SIS group is composed of Cook Islands, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Nauru, Palau and Tuvalu. These nations are also member of the PIF.

Faster internet under proposal for Nauru

Through its ongoing partnership with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and recent induction to the World Bank, Nauru intends to participate in this multi-million dollar project which will transform the nation, bringing an end to the overreliance on current, unreliable digital satellite systems.

Nauru Heads of Mission Appointed

President Baron Waqa met with the three in a lunch meeting recently to discuss ways forward for each mission.

Mrs Chitra Jeremiah will be placed in the Embassy in Taipei Taiwan, Ms Kim Aroi in the High Commission office in Suva Fiji, and Mrs Rosie Harris at the Consul-General office in Brisbane Australia.

Registered voters urged to check electoral roll for Nauru elections

If there are any errors or if your name is not on the roll, please go to the Electoral Commission office and advise the oversight.          

The roll will close tomorrow Saturday 18 June at 5.00pm.

If you are not on the roll at 5.00pm tomorrow, then you will not be eligible to vote in the 2016 General Elections.

Polling will be held on 9 July.

Digicel Nauru signs Jezza Uepa as Brand Ambassador

Jezza who originally hails from Ewa District in Nauru is very excited for his renewed term to serve as the Brand Ambassador of Digicel representing his country Nauru.

He says: “Digicel has made my training and moving around extremely very easy and I am very happy with the support they give me – without this support I would not be able to do what I do and train extremely hard”. 

Nauru's Stephen re-elected President of Oceania Weightlifting Federation

The OWF Electoral Congress was opened by Laisenia Bale Tuitubou, Fiji’s Minister for Youth and Sports, and saw Stephen elected until 2020 having first been appointed in 2008.                  

The 46-year-old former weightlifter was voted in as the President of the Nauru Olympic Committee (NOC) in 2009 to replace Vinson Detenamo, who held the position since the body was first recognised by the International Olympic Committee in 1994.

The NOC had been largely set-up in 1993 so that Stephen could compete in the Olympics.
