ADB is providing US$2 million and Australia US$390,000 (in equivalent AUD$500,000) in additional financing to the program which was established in June 2020 to support the Cook Islands, Fiji, Kiribati, Niue, Samoa, Tonga, and Tuvalu.

“The additional financing from the Government of Australia is highly appreciated and will be used to expand the scope of the assistance to Fiji where reforms will focus on strengthening public financial management practices in Fiji,” said Regional Director of ADB’s Pacific Subregional Office in Fiji Masayuki Tachiiri.

The refurbished facilities were part of a $390,000 project assistance from the Australian Government to promote and encourage sports and development in Nauru.

The Secretary for Sports, Dagan Kaierua, who was at the opening ceremony recently, expressed his thanks to the Australian Government for the continued support.

"The Ministry for Sports would like to extend its gratitude to Australia for the financial support...this is a 390k projects with other courts around the island," Kaierua said in a Nauru Media News-NTV report.

Scrutiny of the lifetime visa ban by the Liberal-majority Human Rights Committee found there was no reason why refugees and asylum seekers held in immigration detention on Nauru and Manus Island should be banned from visiting Australia for business or tourism in the future.

Chaired by Liberal MP Ian Goodenough, the committee found the ban could be unnecessary because there is no suggestion that any detainee being held presents a danger to Australia or that any future visit could have any adverse effect on national security.

He has called on the Australian Government to return those allegedly involved in the rape of a local, for investigations.

Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull over the weekend announced the one-off refugee resettlement deal between Australia and the US for people on Manus Island and Nauru to be moved to the United States.

Turnbull, alongside Australian Immigration Minister Peter Dutton, over the weekend said the deal would only apply to those currently on Nauru and Manus Island. 

The man, who is understood to have been granted refugee status, was allegedly removed without warning or legal representation.

Daniel Webb, the director of legal advocacy at the Human Rights Law Centre, said the man was not a client of his organisation, but did have a lawyer who was not informed of the removal.

"A decent and compassionate government which respects the rule of law doesn't choose to secretively deport people found to be refugees in the middle of the night without any transparency, due process or access to legal advice," said Mr Webb.
