Nauru President Waqa receives Czech Republic ambassador-designate

Ambassador Jaroslav Olsa Jr. arrived at the government offices and was greeted by Secretary for Foreign Affairs & Trade Michael Aroi with copies of the Letter of Credence before being received by the Commissioner of Police for the playing of the national anthems of the Czech Republic and Nauru and the inspection of the Nauru Police Guard of Honour.

The Ambassador was then escorted to the Office of the President for the presentation of credentials.

Nauru makes economic progress

The nation has been given a rating of ‘largely compliant’ by the OECD’s Global Forum review.

The OECD’s Global Forum is a body that gives direction on how to achieve and maintain international standards and is a body on which Nauru places a high value.

Nauru’s status was reviewed under the Global Forum’s Fast Track Phase 2 process in the lead up to the G20 Summit in July in Germany.

The Minister for Finance David Adeang said Nauru had formally committed to the Automatic Exchange of Information on tax matters.

Pacific's first gender and human rights peer review underway in Nauru

The Human Rights and Gender Peer Review supported by the European Union (EU) and the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat, will examine good practices, identify barriers, and provide solutions toward integrating gender and human rights commitments into national development plans, planning processes and budget cycles.

Nauru President Waqa appoints new honorary consul in India

Mr Bhalla was appointed honorary consul-general of Nauru in New Delhi India on 21 August 1985.

His association with Nauru began in 1982 when he served as Parliamentary Counsel until 1984, and subsequently served in other positions and duties for the Republic.

Mr Bhalla’s son, Charan Kamal Bhalla, is now appointed as the new honorary consul-general to Nauru.

Charan Bhalla graduated in chemical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology followed by an MBA from the Indian Institute of Management.

Nauru memorabilia for 50th Independence anniversary display

As part of the anniversary celebrations, there will be a history display set up for public viewing.

The history display is expected to feature various items and memorabilia (photos, objects, recordings, documents etc) since Nauru’s independence in 1968.

However, another element of the history display will feature war relics and memorabilia in remembrance of Nauru’s involvement of the Second World War.

Sports agreement signing between Australia and Nauru

Australia has allocated $490,000 for the projects, which is expected to be provided within the next two months.

It’s hoped the measures, which include a revised Epon-Keramen style program, will help promote healthier lifestyles throughout the Nauruan community.

The agreement was signed by Nauru’s acting President Aaron Cook and the Australian High Commissioner John Donnelly.

Mr Donnelly said there would be a range of community consultations to determine which facilities across Nauru would be upgraded.

Nauru basketball moving towards the future

With a population of 10,084, Nauru is the smallest state in the South Pacific – this small island country located Northeast of Australia in the Micronesian region is a proud sporting nation. Qualifying for the biggest Basketball event in the Pacific, Nauru was among the top 10 teams in the 2015 Pacific Games.

FIBA Development Manager Annie LaFleur recently visited to help plan the 50-year anniversary festivities and conduct a coach and referee certification clinic.

Israel thanks Nauru; offers water and agri-training

Hotovely offered to bring a delegation from the Micronesian nation to Israel to train in agriculture and water. It should be noted that Israel is allocating 20 scholarships to Nauru in the framework of the activities of the international aid agency MASHAV in various fields. 

Israel sends Nauru medical training in the field of kidney medicine.

President Waqa spoke about the great importance his country sees in the state of Israel in the framework of religious faith regarding the return of the Jewish people to its land.

President Waqa reaffirms Nauru’s commitment to Israel on official visit

The welcome is one of genuine friendship as Nauru stands strong in its support for Israel in international fora especially in Israel’s bid for a seat on the UN Security Council. President Waqa said Nauru will work to encourage neighbouring friends of the pacific islands to support Israel.
 
President Waqa noted the long travel to Israel but one that is important to demonstrate Nauru’s solidarity to Israel and its people.
 
Israeli President Rivkin said Nauru is a true friend and thanked President Waqa for Nauru’s firm and dedicated friendship.
