The Cohort which began on 19 November will run for approximately five months with block courses and online support. 

Participants are from Government Departments, Government Corporations and Instrumentalities and the private sector. 

USP, Pacific TAFE Project Management Consultant Roger Goodman said he looks forward to the delivery of the training.

Ambassador-designate Carlos Manuel Rojas Lago began his visit with a courtesy call on the Secretary for Foreign Affairs and Trade Michael Aroi, and was then received by the Commissioner of Police Corey Caleb for the playing of the national anthems and inspection of the Police Guard of Honour.

Later, Ambassador Lago was escorted to the Office of the President for the presentation of Credentials. 

He said that “The topics of the conference program make it obvious that we will need more professionals in a range of disciplines including but not limited to the law, ocean science, governance and human rights.”

The President encouraged more Nauruans to take up legal studies and assume positions of leadership in the Justice Department.

In welcoming participants, the Secretary of Justice Mr Graham Leung noted that the objective of the conference was to stimulate discussions on topical issues of relevance to the country.

The organisers are overwhelmed with the interest shown by the Island team in this year’s competition.

Oceania 7s Tournament Director, Wayne Schuster says the tournament is expected to be more competitive.

“With Nauru making their first appearance, there will be no shortage of passion and excitement in their maiden appearance at a regional and international Rugby 7s Tournament,” he said.

Nauru, alongside New Caledonia will be making their first appearance at the tournament.

The accusations were made by former justice minister Mathew Batsiua about actions by the Nauru Health Department.

There were claims that the Minister for Health ordered the Director of Health to deny access to Nauru’s de-compression chamber for injured diver Rutherford Jeremiah are untrue.

The government said Mr Batsiua’s comments bring into question where the information was sourced from, as there was no directive of this kind from the Minister. Whatever the source, it was unreliable.

The Government says it condemns the actions of refugee and asylum seekers parents who put their children at risk by intentionally hurting them, ordering them not to eat or drink, or encouraging them to self-harm, in order to influence legal proceedings or create a medical emergency so that they can be taken to Australia.

“As we have stated many times, this has happened and continues to happen, and those who deny this are misinformed or simply don’t want to admit the truth.”

According to a statement released by the Government, the doctor was briefly questioned by police but released without charge after photos were taken of a child without authorisation at the regional processing centre.”

“Under the Asylum Seekers (Regional Processing Centre) Act 2012, photographing of a protected person is an offence whether inside or outside the centre. There is also a long-standing expressed centre rule which forbids the taking of any photographs within the regional processing centre unless it is authorized,” the statement said.

Mr Samarasinha will also be presenting his credentials to the heads of states in the respective countries.

He said he was grateful for the opportunity to meet Pacific leaders at the Pacific Islands Forum summit in Nauru last month.

He said it was the chance to discuss priorities with the leaders and how the UN can deal with them.

He hopes to take something tangible back to the countries as well as have conversations with as many people as possible including representatives of civil society and the media.

The team comprised of ten players under 8, 10, 12 and 14 years, four adult players and the young players parents.

KTF President Bantarawa Ietimeta told Radio Kiribati News the NTA has chosen Kiribati for its training camp because its young players are among the best in the Pacific region.

Ietimeta said training sessions for young players started from 10am to 12pm and the adults from 12pm to 2pm. The team will complete their trainings and return to Nauru on October 7th.

The team’s visit to the country was supported by the Nauru Government and assisted by KTF.
