Ms. Padmaja is presently High Commissioner of India to Fiji, with residence in Suva.

Prior to her appointment she was Deputy Director General, Indian Council for Cultural Relations.

Nauru and India established bilateral relations in 1968 at the time of the island nation’s independence.

Nauru has an Honorary Consul General in New Delhi.

Nauru President Lionel Aingimea today witnessed the upgrade work as engineers installed large reinforced concrete piles into the atoll’s bedrock. Over 500 of these concrete piles will form the basis of the port’s main structure.

“We are now realizing our dream of having an international port, and strong development partnership during implementation will be the key to the success of this project,” said Mr. Aingimea.

Speaking to the UN General Assembly in New York recently, Mr Aingimea said “After an economic collapse followed by many years of stagnation, far too many Nauruans have been left behind and they are hungry for improvements in the quality of their lives.

“It is the highest priority of my administration to restore to them what has been lost. To return what has been taken and deliver on the promises that have gone unfulfilled for too long.”

Mr Aingimea said the immediate focus for his government was reforming the health and education systems.

The conference, hosted by the Chief of the Defence Force General Angus Campbell AO DSC, Australian Federal Police Commissioner Reece P Kershaw APM, and Australian Border Force Commissioner Michael Outram APM, facilitated strategic-level dialogue and demonstrated capabilities relevant to security agencies across the region.

The themes for the event focused on transnational, organised and serious crime; border security, and humanitarian assistance and disaster relief.

In a tweet, President Tsai said she is deeply moved when President Aingimea adjusted his flights after the UN General Assembly in New York to stopover in Taiwai and ‘give weight to his words.’

President Aingimea rearranged his itineraries and made a layover in Taiwan on Saturday during his return trip to Nauru to “show his support for Taiwan,” according to a statement issued by the Presidential Office on Friday (Sept. 27).

The President said tuna fishing generates $6 billion annually for the handful of small island developing States known as the Parties to the Nauru Agreement (PNA), a 1982 accord on fisheries management.

“This fishery is projected to disperse and disappear from the waters of the nine-member countries and territories of the PNA in the not too distant future: another victim of the climate crisis,” he told fellow world leaders.

Nauru is one of Taiwan's four remaining Pacific allies after Solomon Islands and Kiribati cut ties last week in favour of China.

Tuvalu, the Marshall Islands and Palau have all since re-affirmed links with Taiwan, as did Nauru's president, Lionel Aingimea, on Thursday.

"Taiwan has been a good partner and has worked closely with us in many sectors that have brought great benefits to the people of Nauru," Mr Aingimea said.

The switch from Tel Aviv was announced last month by Nauru and follows a controversial 2017 decision by US President Donald Trump.

The Arab Parliament, which represents 22-member states, on Monday rejected the move as a violation of international law.

Xinhua reports Speaker Mishaal bin Fahm Al-Salami calling on Nauru to respect UN resolutions on the legal status of East Jerusalem.

Palestinian officials have also condemned Nauru's decision.

Foreign Minister Israel Katz commended the island nation for its recognition on Wednesday evening in a tweet that also said, “We will continue to strengthen Jerusalem and to bring about the recognition and opening of diplomatic missions and embassies in our capital.”

Nauru’s mission to the United Nations in New York said in a letter dated August 16 to the Israeli mission: “The Mission of Nauru has the honor to convey the decision of the Government of the Republic of Nauru to formally recognize the City of Jerusalem as the Capital City of the State of Israel.”

Nauru Coach Dominic Tabuna said that their first game against Papua New Guinea has provided them with a lot of experience and motivation for the tournament.

“When I think of all the nations here playing here, I would assume PNG would be the toughest to beat with the fact that this is their home ground and their own weather and their own crowd. It all adds up with the experience they have over us, which is immense,” Tabuna said.
