USP to hold 86th Council meeting in Nauru

USP Council is the highest decision-making body of the University, and meets twice a year to discuss the affairs of the University.

The two-day meeting will be chaired by the Pro-Chancellor and Chair of Council, Mr Winston Thompson.  

The 86th Council meeting will be officially opened by David Adeang, Acting President of Nauru on 22 May 2018.

Ahead of the two-day Council meeting, the new Nauru Campus will also be officially opened today by Mr Adeang.  

Australia's High Court rejects Nauru refugee claims

The court upheld decisions of the Supreme Court of Nauru, where the asylum seekers have been exiled since 2013.

A Pakistani man from Peshawar told the court he feared being persecuted by the Taliban if he returned to the Pakistan city.

The court found while there was a real possibility he would be harmed in Peshawar, he could move elsewhere in Pakistan.

Another Pakistani feared he would be harmed by a militant political party in Karachi because he had injured one of its senior members.

Nauru Constitution Day first day cover released

The FDC features the Republic’s crest embossed in gold as the postage stamp, the First Day of Issue cancel (postmark), and a cache featuring the crest in full colour with the relevant dates and anniversary year.

Chairman of Nauru Post Samuel Grundler presented President Baron Waqa a folder containing the first day issue and explained the gold embossed stamp that is to signify the golden jubilee year for Constitution Day and Nauru.

President Waqa then presented the folder to Minister Scotty.

ADB signs submarine cable deal for Nauru

The agreements were signed by ADB Vice-President Stephen Groff, Finance and Finance Minister of Nauru David Adeang ahead of ADB’s 51st Annual Meeting in Manila, Philippines this week.

“The cable projects will boost the connectivity of these Pacific countries to the rest of the world,” said Mr. Groff. “Faster and more affordable internet will improve peoples’ access to economic and social development opportunities.”

Nauru waives journo fees for PIF

The Nauru government is hosting the leaders' meeting in September and says up to three media representatives will be approved from each member country.

Nauru had been under pressure over its $6000 visa application fee which was brought in four years ago amid focus on Australia's controversial offshore detention camp on the island.

The government said a total of 30 journalists will be accredited to cover the meeting in the first nine days of September.

More Nauru refugees sent to be resettled in the US

The group comprised, four Afghans, four Pakistanis, three single Rohingyans; and one Rohingya couple and their three children.

The Refugee Action Coalition said they would be settled in various locations, including Chicago, Las Vegas, Texas and Arizona.

This bring the total number of refugees from Nauru resettled in the US to 155, while just 85 refugees from Papua New Guinea's Manus have so far been accepted into America.

Meanwhile, 23 refugees from Manus bound for the US are still in Port Moresby, since they were transferred there in January

Nauru advocates for South Ossetia at UN

In comments reported by South Ossetia's government information service, President Anatoly Bibilov said because an active foreign policy was his administration's priority, Nauru's support was worth a lot.

Nauru is the only Pacific country to recognise South Ossetia as an independent country while Georgia considers it as territory occupied by Russian troops.

As a consequence of Nauru's stance, it was no longer eligible for any US government financial help.

Nauru to receive assistance from Taiwan funding to PIF

On Wednesday in Suva, Taiwan's representative of the Trade Mission to Fiji, Herman Chiu, presented the forum with a cheque as part of his government's annual regional assistance.

The forum's deputy secretary general, Cristelle Pratt, said the assistance would support an initiative to build the capacity of the forum's smaller island states.

The small island states to receive this assistance are the Cook Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Kiribati, Nauru, Niue, Palau, Marshall Islands, and Tuvalu.

Silver medal keeps Nauru's Commonealth Games streak alive

The 18 year old lifted 243kg in the women's over 90kg division to finish a surprise second place behind the shock gold medallist, Feagaiga Stowers from Samoa.

The Brisbane-based Amoe-Tarrant started lifting on Nauru when she was 11 but only returned to the sport three years ago.

One of her goals was to compete at the Commonwealth Games but she admits winning a medal wasn't something she'd contemplated.
