Premier League

Premier League not toughest, says Guardiola

Guardiola is into his second season in charge of City, having won three LaLiga titles – and two Champions Leagues – at the helm of Barcelona and three Bundesliga crowns with Bayern Munich.

But the Spaniard said the Premier League was not yet the most difficult, pointing to the records of English clubs in Europe.

Chelsea were the last English side to reach a decider in the Champions League, claiming the trophy in 2012, with Spain (six times), Germany (two) and Italy (two) the nations with finalists since then.

PL chief glad Neymar didn't come

The Ligue 1 club met Neymar's release clause at Barcelona last week, smashing the global transfer record previously held by Manchester United from when they splashed out €105m for Paul Pogba in 2016.

Scudamore insists seeing his league lose that milestone is of no concern to him, with the restraint shown by the biggest sides something he views as a positive.

And he does not think the record amount spent on Neymar will be challenged any time soon.

"There is a point where you say actually 'no'," Scudamore said to Sky Sports.

Tottenham enjoy best finish in over 50 years

The final goal at the 118-year stadium came from Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney but Victor Wanyama and Harry Kane had already scored to ensure it was a joyful send-off by the hosts.

After a season at Wembley, the north London club is due back at White Hart Lane for the start of the 2018-19 season.

For United, the loss left Jose Mourinho's side relying on winning the Europa League to qualify for the Champions League.

Middlesbrough relegation confirmed

Steve Agnew's side knew that a defeat at Stamford Bridge would result in their return to the Championship after just one season in the top flight and they proved unable to avoid that fate, marking the fourth time they have been demoted from the Premier League.

First-half goals from Diego Costa and Marcos Alonso left Middlesbrough with a huge task and there was to be no miraculous fightback, Nemanja Matic extending the league leaders' advantage after the break.

Spurs plan to pile on the pressure

Spurs guaranteed they will finish above Arsenal for the first time since 1995 as second-half goals from Dele Alli and Harry Kane secured a 2-0 win over Arsene Wenger's side.

A victory over the Hammers at London Stadium would reduce the gap between second-placed Spurs and Premier League leaders Chelsea to just one point, with Antonio Conte's men, who cruised to a 3-0 victory at Everton earlier on Sunday, not in action until they host relegation-threatened Middlesbrough at Stamford Bridge on Monday.

United offer hope to Spurs with 2-0 win over Chelsea

Goals by Marcus Rashford and Ander Herrera sank Chelsea and, with six games left for the top two, there is little room for any more slip-ups by Antonio Conte's side who a few weeks ago looked like they were running away with the title.

While Chelsea remain favourites to win the league, Conte will be concerned about the manner of the defeat at Old Trafford where they were rarely able to turn possession into chances.

Manchester City and Liverpool draw

City, in third place, stayed a point ahead of the Merseysiders with a game in hand thanks to Sergio Aguero's equalising goal.

Knocked out of the Champions League by Monaco in midweek, City fell behind when full back Gael Clichy conceded a penalty six minutes after halftime and James Milner scored from the spot against his old club.

Liverpool, who had come into the game more after a slow start, were pegged back 18 minutes later when Aguero scored from Kevin de Bruyne's fine low cross.

Chelsea held at Anfield

Spain striker Costa was denied by Liverpool keeper Simon Mignolet, who made amends for being caught off guard by a superb David Luiz free kick midway through the first half.

Georginio Wijnaldum's close-range header levelled the scores in the 57th minute as Liverpool avoided a fourth consecutive home defeat in all competitions although Juergen Klopp's side remain 10 points adrift in fourth place.

Arsenal, who began the day second, suffered a shock 2-1 home defeat by Watford who managed a first league win in eight games.

Swansea City strong despite departures

Ashley Williams joined Everton for £12 million before the season began, while Andre Ayew moved to West Ham and Bafetimbi Gomis signed for Marseille but Fer, who made his loan move from QPR permanent, is not expecting a relegation battle.

Swansea beat Burnley 1-0 in their opening fixture, but have since lost 2-0 to Hull City and 2-1 to Leicester City, leaving some to question whether Francesco Guidolin can improve on last season's 12th-place finish in the Premier League.

Hazard must learn to handle expectations at Chelsea, says Ballack

Chelsea star Eden Hazard needs to handle expectations if he is to produce his very best form for the club, former midfielder Michael Ballack has said.

The Belgium international inspired Chelsea to a Premier League and League Cup double in 2014-15, but endured a hugely disappointing campaign last year as the champions finished 10th in the top flight.
