Wallabies wing Drew Mitchell announces retirement

Wallabies wing Drew Mitchell has announced his retirement from rugby.

Mitchell, who has plied his trade in France with Toulon since 2013, revealed on Twitter on Monday that he was calling time on his career after winning 71 caps for Australia between 2005 and 2016.

The 33-year-old has desperately struggled with injury since returning to the Wallabies squad for the last World Cup in England back in 2015.

He generally peaked for World Cups and ended up with 14 tries, just one short of the record shared by Jonah Lomu and South Africa's Bryan Habana.

Mitchell's latest injuries have included a thigh problem and a torn hamstring, after persistent groin problems in 2016.

The former Reds, Force and Waratahs wing last featured for the Wallabies in a 23-17 win against South Africa in last year's Rugby Championship contest in Brisbane.

At Toulon alongside Wallabies teammate and good friend Matt Giteau, Mitchell helped the European giants claim back-to-back Champions Cups in 2014 and 2015 as well as the Top 14 title in 2014.

Mitchell played in three World Cups, including in 2015 when he started on the wing in the final loss to the All Blacks at Twickenham.
