There will be more dead people than living on Facebook

In 82 years, there will be more Facebook accounts belonging to dead people than those alive, according to a statistician.

The grim statistic was calculated by Fusion, which asked a PhD student to model a projection.

Hachem Sadikki, a statistics student at the University of Massachusetts, used Facebook user growth numbers, demographic data and death rates to pin 2098 as the year memorial pages outnumber the profiles pages of the living.

However, the maths depends on several factors to be correct and relevant.

First, Facebook is only 12 years old, and while it may have 1.5 billion users, social media dominance is fleeting - just ask MySpace or Friendster - so it may not even be around in 82 years.

Second, the data relies on people turning their profiles into memorials, something that only recently became possible.

Social media culture may change so that it's not acceptable to memorialise your profile as it becomes to upsetting to loved ones.

Sadikki is not the first one to attempt the calculation.

In 2003, Randall Munroe of the web comic XKCD, estimated Facebook would transform into a digital grave between the 2060s or the 2130s.
