Fireworks light up Nauru skies for Independence Day

A large crowd gathered around the runway in Yaren and Boe on Monday night for a spectacular fireworks display to commemorate Independence Day.

Families came from all around the island and spread mats and set up chairs while others came in their cars or on their motorbikes well before 9pm to get a good view.

Children watched in awe as each firework exploded and lit up the skies with an array of colours. Some toddlers though clung to their mothers in fright during the 15 minute display.

Teenagers also grabbed the opportunity to take selfies with the display as their background.

The fireworks display was organized by the government.

Nauru celebrated its 48th anniversary of independence on January 31.
