Nauru and Taiwan sign MOU for medical referrals

Nauru and Taiwan have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that will enable Nauruans to receive tertiary level care that cannot be provided on island.

The MOU was signed by Nauru’s President Baron Waqa and Superintendent at the Taichung Veteran’s General Hospital Dr Wayne Sheu on Thursday, 10 December.

Referred patients will include oncology, cardiac, congenital, and patients seen by the Taiwanese team on Nauru.

The MoU means the Nauru Ministry of Health will recognise the TVGH as one of its overseas referral hospitals.

It is a five year contract which signals the long relationship that Nauru has with Taiwan where regular specialist teams have come to Nauru. The specialist medical teams visit Nauru every three months.

Currently on island is an endocrinologist specialist from Taiwan who will be in Nauru for three months.
