South Africa's last apartheid president dies at 85

The 85-year-old had been diagnosed with cancer earlier this year.

He came to power in 1989 under apartheid, a system of legalised racism, but later became a key figure in the transition to democracy.

He ordered Nelson Mandela's release from prison, leading to historic polls where the anti-apartheid leader became the first black president.

All Blacks edge Springboks in Rugby Championship thriller

The 100th test between rugby's two most successful nations did not disappoint and it was not until fullback Jordie Barrett kicked his fourth penalty two minutes from time that the All Blacks took the lead for the final time.

All Blacks winger Will Jordan and his Springboks counterpart S'bu Nkosi scored early tries but from then on it was a kicking duel between South Africa first-five Handre Pollard and Barrett to decide the spoils.

France to host African Rugby World Cup qualifiers

The top eight African teams compete in the Rugby Africa Cup 2022 in France, which will serve as the last qualifying round for the 2023 World Cup.

The French are also hosts of the 2023 World Cup, which will be held in September-October.

The African knockout tournament will be in July 2022, with the winning team directly qualifying for the World Cup and set to join hosts France, New Zealand’s top-ranked All Blacks, Italy and the Americas 1 qualifier in Pool A.

The runners-up will get a place in the final qualification tournament for the world showpiece event.

Johannesburg mayor Jolidee Matongo killed in car crash

Jolidee Matongo had been campaigning with Mr Ramaphosa before the accident.

His vehicle collided with a van while trying to avoid a pedestrian who had run on to the road, local media report.

The pedestrian and the other vehicle's driver also died, while Mr Matongo's two bodyguards are being treated in hospital for their injuries.

Mr Matongo only became mayor on 10 August following the death of his predecessor from Covid complications.

Springboks will play anywhere - Kolisi

The two teams, who meet at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, were due to share a charter flight to Australia on Sunday for the next leg of the competition.

However, organisers are now scrambling for an alternative venue to complete the championship after New Zealand said on Friday they would not host the Springboks next month, or travel to play in Australia next week.

South Africa claim series win over British & Irish Lions

After losing the opening Test, the world champions bounced back to claim the remaining matches as the Lions will head home licking their wounds.

Cheslin Kolbe scored South Africa’s only try while Handre Pollard added eight points and Steyn kicked two penalties in the latter stages in Cape Town.

For the Lions they crossed through Ken Owens while Finn Russell slotted a conversion and three penalty goals, but the touring outfit came up short.

Lions come from behind to beat South Africa

Biggar kicked four penalties and a conversion for a 14-point personal tally to take the Lions to victory after they were 12-3 down at halftime but came back strongly in the second half.

Luke Cowan-Dickie scored the Lions' only try with Owen Farrell adding a key late penalty while the Springboks' points came from a Faf de Klerk try and four first-half penalties from Handre Pollard.

The two teams meet again next Saturday in the second test, also at the Cape Town Stadium.

     

South Africa Zuma riots: Death toll mounts amid looting

This includes 10 people killed in a stampede during looting on Monday night at a shopping centre in Soweto, the country's biggest township.

Almost 800 people have been arrested in the unrest that began last Thursday and turned violent over the weekend.

The military has now been deployed to help the overstretched police.

South Africa's warm-up Test against Georgia cancelled

Later on Wednesday, the Lions announced two players were isolating after one of the management team tested positive.

The Lions' warm-up fixture against the Bulls on Saturday was postponed because of Covid-19 cases in the hosts' camp.

South Africa is currently battling a third wave of infections.

The Springboks have had to isolate twice in the past two weeks, with their three-Test series against the Lions taking place on consecutive weekends from 24 July.
