Senegal president says 11 newborn babies die in fire at regional hospital

I have just learned with pain and consternation the death of 11 newborn babies in the fire that occurred in the neonatology department of the Mame Abdou Aziz Sy Dabakh hospital in Tivaouane," Sall said in a tweet without giving further details about the fire.

"To their mothers and their families, I express my deepest sympathy," Sall, who was on a state visit in Angola, added.

Senegal health minister Abdoulaye Diouf Sarr said on private Senegalese television TFM that "according to preliminary investigation, a short circuit triggered the fire".

Japan pip Senegal on fair play

With the two sides tied on points and goals heading into their final matches, each required only a point to be sure of a place in the next round.

In bizarre circumstances, though, Japan went down 1-0 to already eliminated Poland as Senegal lost by the same scoreline to Colombia.

With Colombia climbing to the top of the group, yellow card rankings were required and Japan came out on top, having only been cautioned four times to Senegal's six.

Japan, knowing this outcome, opted not to attack in the closing stages and instead gambled on Senegal not scoring in Samara.

Japan 2 Senegal 2

After winning their opening games, three points for either side would have made them outright Group H leaders and put them in pole position for a last-16 berth.

As it is, they will have to endure an anxious wait for the result of Poland and Colombia's clash later on Sunday to know what they need to do in the final round of fixtures on Thursday.

Poland 1 Senegal 2

Poland were widely expected to qualify for the knockout rounds but after suffering a seventh loss in their last nine World Cup matches, FIFA's eighth-ranked team are in danger of making an early exit.

Thiago Cionek's own goal, the defender deflecting in a shot from Idrissa Gueye, handed Senegal the lead in the 37th minute.

Senegal doubled their lead when M'Baye Niang took advantage of a mix-up between Grzegorz Krychowiak and Wojciech Szczesny to finish with ease.

Plane bound for Senegal with 7 on board goes missing

Senegalese authorities said the crews of a ship and two planes were scouring an area off the Atlantic coast of Senegal for signs of the wreckage.

Magueye Maram, an official with the Senegalese Aviation Authority, said that the plane lost contact late Saturday. It disappeared from the radar when it was 111 kilometers (69 miles) west of Senegal's seaside capital, Dakar.

In addition to the patient, the plane was carrying a Senegalese doctor, two nurses and the three-person crew of the Senegalair-operated flight.
