Nauru Police acknowledges community partnership for safe festive season

Nauru Media News- NTV reports communities helped Police in executing their duties and responsibilities during their special roster by reporting drink driving and unruly and unexpected behavior in the community.

It was a challenging period where families and friends gathered to celebrate Christmas and the New Year and there was a lot of movement.

Despite the many events, Commissioner Notte was very pleased and proud to announce that NPF’s mandate of Safety Safety Safety resulted in zero fatality or injuries to persons on the roads either drinking or driving.

Government calls on Nauruans to get serious about road safety

President Baron Waqa, who is also the Minister for Police, has announced a crackdown on drink driving and motorbike riders who are not wearing helmets.

“There are too many unnecessary deaths and injuries on our roads, and our government has been working closely with police and other key stakeholders to significantly reduce the road toll,” he explained. 

Mr Waqa said a country with the population of Nauru should not be seeing such a large amount of accidents.

Country with the highest number of accidents

25,189 accidents were recorded between 1992 and 2002 in Papua New Guinea.

The National Road Safety Authority CEO, Nelson Terema, revealed this today during the launching of Puma Energy’s one week road safety campaign, held a few kilometres away from Port Moresby.

Terema said the 10-year statistics was for year ending 2002, and expects an increase in the last four years.

He added that motor vehicle injuries total 2,189, from 25,189 accidents recorded.
