Extra police sent to Papua

Tabloid Jubi reports that about 150 police personnel were deployed to hunt for the perpetrators of the attack on the Sinak Police Headquarters.

The Papua Police Chief, General Paulus Waterpauw has indicated that police believe they know who the suspects are and have homed in on their communities, searching also for stolen ammunition.

Fiji assistant police commissioner under investigation, sent on leave

This has been confirmed to FBC News by Acting Police Commissioner Brigadier-General Sitiveni Qiliho. Qiliho says it’s too early to talk about what the allegation is –only mentioning that it is serious in nature.

Compensation claims in Honiara an issue

The director of the police community policing and public relations unit, Solomon Sisimia, says a two-day workshop hopes to come up with a standardised arrangement for addressing traditional compensation claims.

Mr Simisia says the meeting between traditional leaders and law enforcement agencies is a result of an increasing number of excessive compensation claims around Honiara.

He says some claims for compensation have been double the traditional standards.

 

Two New Caledonia policemen injured in latest attack

A police spokesperson says four officers were in the town of Mont-Dore at about 2 o'clock in the morning when they challenged a man accused of stealing a motorcycle.

The spokesperson says a car then deliberately hit the officers, injuring two of them.

The driver and the alleged motorcycle thief were then able to escape, and a large police operation has been launched to try and find them.

This morning's incident is the latest in a series of cases of police being targetted in New Caledonia.

After 12 years, RAMSI Police to leave Solomons' Malaita

The Australia-led force was deployed in 2003 after five years of ethnic tensions during which hundreds of people were killed, and thousands forced to flee their homes.

RAMSI has been gradually withdrawing its presence throughout the country as the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force takes control of frontline policing.

The RAMSI force commander, Greg Harrigan, says the police force in Malaita has proven it can maintain law and order without frontline assistance from RAMSI.

Fiji Police investigate death on fishing vessel at sea

FBC News reports a police spokesperson saying the vessel bound for Suva ran aground on a reef near Gau yesterday with the crew needing to be rescued by a passenger boat.

The police say the man is believed to have been killed on the 30th of July by another crew member who is now in police custody.

Niue police warn against scam emails

Niue's chief of police, Tony Edwards, says there have been reports of emails trying to scam people in Niue to provide personal information and send money overseas.

He says these types of scams are a common problem in the Pacific, and Niue police have been out in the community raising awareness about the issue.

Tony Edwards says they've been teaching people how to recognise the scams and are telling them to report it to the police.
