Tryless Otago wing Jona Nareki puts team first as Northland await

Nareki, who is preparing to take on Northland in the first Mitre 10 semifinal against Northland on Friday, sliced through the Tasman defence last Saturday and was heading for a certain try underneath the sticks when he tossed the ball to Hammington.

Puzzled onlookers wondered if Nareki owed a debt to his Highlanders team-mate, but it appears the gesture was a selfless act from a maturing footballer who is starting to understand the bigger picture.

“It was pretty bad because it's part of my job description to score tries,” Nareki told Stuff.

Otago take Log o' Wood off Taranaki

Taranaki claimed the coveted prize last weekend, with All Black brothers Beauden and Jordie Barrett helping them edge Canterbury 23-22 in Christchurch.

But the Bulls' latest reign has proved short-lived, thanks to an impressive performance from Otago.

Using the blustery wind to their advantage, the visitors powered out to 22-5 lead at the halftime break and the buffer was too much for Taranaki to overhaul.

Otago comfortably held on to grab the Shield for the the third time in last decade.
