Nauru joins Pacific Meteorological Council

Islands Business reports in welcoming the countries on board, new chair of the PMC, Lloyd Tahani said the countries could now enjoy the benefits of being part of the Council.

“We are so happy to have Nauru and Tokelau as members of PMC and having new members joining the Council was a good initiative, especially when we want to work on resilience for all the Pacific island countries.”

“Through the regional framework, they would benefit in developing the capacity of their meteorological services so that are they able to serve their countries,” he said.

USA continues refugee vetting on Nauru

More than one thousand refugees on Nauru are thought to be eligible.

RNZI reports last week protests erupted near the entrance of the centre where a bus was reportedly set on fire.

After four years of detention the refugees on the island are growing increasingly frustrated at delays with the US plan, more than 10 months after the deal was first announced by Canberra.

Flying Frigates win rugby 7s tournament

The tournament held on Saturday 5th August was the first 7s Tournament of the 2017 Series and set a milestone as being the first-ever rugby played under lights in Nauru.

Great White Sharks came in third place while Rebels settled for fourth place

Johhny Dagiaro showed he meant business with 5 tries and 5 conversions totaling 35 individual points in the tournament.

All player and teams commented on the difference made by being able to play under lights.

The whole environment was cooler and there was excitement with playing under the improved conditions.

Nauru seeks judge to hasten asylum seeker appeals

While most judges on Nauru come from overseas, this job appears to be aimed at a Nauru lawyer, as it requires the applicant to have had a lengthy entitlement to practice on Nauru.

The position follows other recent changes to the judiciary, including making a court registrar the new chief justice, a refusal to renew another judge's contract and a decision to hire a retired Australian judge to hear the trial of 16 people charged over an anti-government protest two years ago.

RNZI reports the additional judge is expected to be appointed for a term of 12 months.

     

Nauru’s athlete Trienssa Lanja Fritz named in Pacific Inspiring Women list

The campaign acknowledges Pacific women who have made a significant contribution to the social, economic, cultural and political development in Pacific islands countries and territories.

At only 22, Fritz has already been involved in the sport of athletics for many years, first as a high performance sprinter representing Nauru at international meets and as a development officer with Nauru Athletics Association since 2016.

Nauru bringing in Australian judge for 'riot' trial

The Nauru justice minister, David Adeang, in a statement to parliament, said that, because of the number of defendants, the complexity and likely length of the trial, they will appoint an acting judge just for this case.

He said that judge would be a recently retired Australian Supreme Court or Federal Court judge.

Mr Adeang, who continues to call the protest a 'riot' said the government will be seeking recommendations from the Australian Bar Association on possible judges.

SPC needs to look beyond traditional donor partners: Nauru President

Speaking at the 10th conference of SPC on the theme “Innovative Partnerships for Sustainable Development’, Baron Waqa said the Pacific must adapt to the changing circumstances facing the region.

“I am of the view that we must support SPC to do its work based on the priorities of the region we have identified such as the SAMOA Pathway and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). 

New justices for Nauru

The current Registrar of the Supreme Court of Nauru, Filimone Jitoko, has been appointed the new Chief Justice, replacing his Honour Chief Justice Joni Madraiwiwi, who passed away last September following a short illness.

His Honour Justice Jitoko, a former Judge (2002-2009) and Registrar (1985-1987) of the High Court of Fiji, was also the Solicitor General of Fiji and held the position of Secretary to the Fijian Cabinet (1993-1996).

Nauru first PIC to sign UNPS 2018 – 2022

Nauru President Baron Divavesi Waqa, as Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Nauru, and United Nations in the Pacific Resident Coordinator Osnat Lubrani jointly signed the UNPS on Tuesday (July 18).

The signing too place after one year of extensive consultations and a final joint review and validation by the UN and Government counterparts, on the occasion of a joint UN mission to Nauru.

The UN Resident Coordinator led the mission, which was comprised of representatives from UNICEF, UNDP and UN Women.

The review recommendations call for a gender and human rights-focused review of the Sustainable Development Strategy and coverage of specific groups and issues that have emerged following the last revision in 2009.
