Nearly 1 million affected by Myanmar floods; 99 dead

     

 The death toll was on the verge of topping 100.

In some places, only the roofs of homes could be seen. International aid is on the way following appeals by the government, but so far, most of the help has come from volunteers ferrying noodles, rice and clean water door-to-door in small boats.

The National Disaster Management Authority said the flooding has affected more than 800,000 people in 2,275 villages. About 2,900 houses have collapsed or are partially damaged.

The northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province is the worst affected, with 59 deaths reported there, according to NDMA's statement. The Pakistani part of Kashmir and southern part of eastern Punjab province each reported 22 deaths.

A cyclone struck the worst-hit state of West Bengal, where 48 people have been killed and nearly 215,000 villagers have been taken to relief camps.

Another 28 deaths were reported from western Rajasthan state.

The annual monsoon season in India stretches from June through September-end.

It causes deaths and severe damage to homes and food crops.

21 feared dead in mudslide in India's remote northeast

The mudslide occurred in Joumol, a village in Manipur state close to India's border with Myanmar, said police officer Herojit Singh.

Police reinforcements were finding it difficult to reach the area which has been cut off by road because of heavy rains over the past three days, Singh said.

He said that the rescuers would use helicopters to land in the area on Sunday after day-break.
