Raheem Sterling's 13th league goal of the season secured the result for Pep Guardiola's side and sent them 15 points clear of Manchester United at the top.

The only negative for the visitors was the loss of captain Vincent Kompany to injury early in the first half, the centre-back going off with a suspected calf problem.

The slender scoreline belied what was one of City's most comfortable victories of an astounding campaign, with Newcastle offering almost no resistance despite having lost their previous four league matches at home.

By winning 4-0 at Swansea on Wednesday (Thursday NZ time), City racked up their 15th straight victory - a feat never achieved in the 129-year history of England's top division.

Guardiola is into his second season in charge of City, having won three LaLiga titles – and two Champions Leagues – at the helm of Barcelona and three Bundesliga crowns with Bayern Munich.

But the Spaniard said the Premier League was not yet the most difficult, pointing to the records of English clubs in Europe.

Chelsea were the last English side to reach a decider in the Champions League, claiming the trophy in 2012, with Spain (six times), Germany (two) and Italy (two) the nations with finalists since then.

"He had a knock on the leg and he cannot play," Guardiola said, before casting doubt on De Bruyne's participation in City's matches over the coming week.

City had to come from behind three times to earn the draw, with the home side's Moussa Dembele scoring at the start of each half and Raheem Sterling netting a first-half own goal for the Scottish champions.

Celtic were unrecognizable from the side that was humbled 7-0 at Barcelona in their opening game.

But City simply refused to be subdued, responding with strikes from Fernandinho, the excellent Sterling and Nolito and coming close to a late winner that would have equalled Tottenham Hotspur's 11 straight wins in 1960-61 as the best start to a season by any English club.
