Nauru President announces historic Climate talks between Forum Leaders and UN Secretary General

Secretary General Guterres is travelling to the region to meet Pacific leaders in order to drive momentum in the lead-up to the United Nations Climate Action Summit in September.

“For the Pacific climate change is not a debate or a policy question – it is our reality,” said President Waqa.

“It is right that the UN Secretary General is coming to our region to prepare for his Summit. I know he appreciates the seriousness of the issue and understands the countries and people of the Blue Pacific are facing an existential threat not tomorrow, but today,” said President Waqa.

The program aims to identify, support and train women leaders involved in basketball in the Pacific region. This support builds the capacity of women through a multifaceted training regime that develops leadership, governance, public speaking and negotiating skills.

UN in Nauru says women don't see women as leaders

UN Women has been running a series of workshops, hoping to increase women's participation in politics before the elections later this year.

Its development manager in Nauru Erana Aliklik said the mindset of men as head of the house and country was pervasive and needs to be changed.
