Lance Armstrong settles with US Government over lawsuit suing for lost sponsorship during Tour de France doping

Armstrong was stripped of his record seven Tour de France victories after admitting he used performance-enhancing drugs throughout much of his career.

The deal came as the two sides prepared for a trial that was scheduled to start May 7 in Washington. Armstrong's former US Postal Service teammate Floyd Landis filed the original lawsuit in 2010 and is eligible for up to 25 per cent of the settlement.

Nike fights subpoena in federal lawsuit against Armstrong

Armstrong and the government both have subpoenaed Nike, which was one of Armstrong's major sponsors until it dropped him in 2012 after his use of performance-enhancing drugs was exposed.

The government is suing Armstrong to recover more than $30 million the U.S. Postal Service paid to sponsor his teams from 1998-2004. Damages could go as high as $100 million. The lawsuit was initially filed by former Armstrong teammate Floyd Landis, who stands to collect a portion of any penalty against Armstrong.

Government demanding Lance Armstrong's medical records

Court records show that government lawyers subpoenaed the Indiana University School of Medicine on July 30 to provide records of Armstrong's treatments and donations he later made to the school.

The demand came in the government's lawsuit to recover millions of dollars in sponsorship money the U.S. Postal Service paid to Armstrong's teams from 1998-2004. Penalties could approach $100 million.
