Court blocks bid to close world's largest refugee camp

A directive to shut the Dadaab camp and forcibly repatriate about 260,000 Somali refugees living there was issued last year.

The deadline for its closure had been extended until May, but a high court judge ruled the decision was tantamount to an act of group persecution.

The government said it would appeal against the ruling on security grounds.

It said that attacks on its soil by the Somalia-based al-Shabab group had been planned in the camp.

The decision that eases pressure on Somalis who feared the camp would close by the end of May.

Kenya's Internal Security Minister abused his power by ordering the closure of Dadaab camp, Judge John Mativo said, adding that the Minister and other officials had "acted in excess and in abuse of their power, in violation of the rule of law and in contravention of their oaths of office."

Kenyan schools torched in protest

The fires, which mostly target dormitories, have destroyed school supplies and personal belongings and forced thousands of students out of school. Other schools have preemptively closed out of fear of more blazes.

While arson attacks in schools are not a new phenomena in Kenya, the escalating rate of the fires has all eyes on the challenges facing Kenya's education system. The people and motives behind the blazes remain unclear, but many suspect students, citing student anger about strict new policies intended to clean up schools after a series of cheating scandals.
