Football returns to Aleppo after five years of war

Local side Al-Ittihad beat their city rivals Hurriya 2-1 on Saturday.

There has been no professional football in Aleppo since it was divided between the army and rebel forces in 2011.

But the government regained complete control of the city last month in a major offensive.

The grass was brown and weathered from the winter cold, and the stadium had clearly been damaged by the war's bombing campaigns - but the atmosphere was like any local football game elsewhere.

Clement appointed Swansea boss

Clement, 44, has been assistant manager at Bayern Munich to Carlo Ancelotti, with whom he also worked at Chelsea, Paris St Germain and Real Madrid.

In his only managerial job, however, the Englishman lasted less than a year at Championship (second tier) Derby County, who sacked him last February.

Swansea were reported to have interviewed him before appointing Bradley in October.

The American was dismissed just before Christmas, having won only two of his 11 games since taking over from Francesco Guidolin.

Nauru Stars back to back champions

The Stars played against three teams where they were undefeated and snatched the Lightning Cup.

They went to compete in the main competition, the Oceania Championships.

The boys were fantastic on the field winning every game played against Fiji, Tonga and Solomon.

The grand final saw the Stars clash with the strong Fiji team where they played superbly and were named Oceania Champions 2016.

Proud parents, supporters and President of AFL Nauru Mathew Batsiua waited at the airport for their arrival.

The players were greeted with flower garlands.

Ronaldo wins Ballon d’Or

Respected publication France Football named the 31-year-old forward as its player of the year on Monday, Ronaldo claiming the accolade ahead of arch-rival Lionel Messi of Barcelona.

Ronaldo enjoyed a glittering 2015-16 season with club and country, lifting the Champions League with Real Madrid and finally ending his wait for international honours, as Portugal triumphed at Euro 2016.

The former Sporting CP player won his first Ballon d'Or at Manchester United in 2008, before collecting the prize again at Madrid in 2013 and 2014.

USA football coach sacked

Klinsmann was under contract through 2018 but his future with the team had been in doubt after a pair of recent losses left their hopes of qualifying for the next World Cup in serious peril.

"Today we made the difficult decision of parting ways with Juergen Klinsmann, our head coach of the U.S. Men's National Team and technical director," U.S. Soccer president Sunil Gulati said in a statement. "We want to thank Juergen for his hard work and commitment during these last five years.

Alcohol ban looms for 2022 World Cup

The Qatari government will uphold the ban on alcohol in all public places during the tournament, with a booze ban in stadiums also likely.

People can get a drink at a licensed hotel, restaurant or bar while local residents need a permit to buy takeaway alcohol.

Qatari officials have previously said the half a million fans expected to attend the tournament would be allowed to consume alcohol in designated zones, but that now appears unlikely.

Mourinho questions mentality of united players

United eased past Swansea 3-1 on Sunday to end a four-match winless streak in the Premier League.

Mourinho was forced to use a make-shift defence for the trip to Liberty Stadium, with duo Chris Smalling and Luke Shaw late withdrawals, while Daley Blind was only fit enough for the bench.

Ashley Young, Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo and Matteo Darmian completed the back four, and Mourinho had some words for players who deemed themselves unfit on the weekend.

Two years of Messi, Suarez and Neymar

The South American trident made their mark just four minutes into a clash Luis Enrique's side would eventually lose 3-1 to old rivals Real Madrid, Suarez - making his Barca debut following a four-month ban picked up for biting Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini during the 2014 World Cup - teeing up Neymar to open the scoring at Santiago Bernabeu.

Two years later, MSN are, without a shadow of a doubt, the most potent attacking force in world football.

With the help of Opta, we pick out some of the key numbers from the past two years of MSN.

Neymar joins fellow heavyweights on Ballon d'Or shortlist

Neymar finished third behind the superstar duo last year as Barcelona team-mate Messi collected the prestigious award for the fifth time in his career.

Ronaldo is favourite to usurp the Argentine and collect his fourth gong after firing Real Madrid to Champions League glory before serving as Portugal captain during his country's triumphant Euro 2016 campaign.

Ibrahimovic expects more from United

United are third in Group A, behind Fenerbahce and Feyenoord, following a tight victory for Jose Mourinho's men, with captain Wayne Rooney again left on the bench.

Ibrahimovic scored for his seventh different club in European competition, but the veteran striker thinks United found it difficult to create space against a determined Ukrainian outfit.

"It was not an easy game," Ibrahimovic told BT Sport. "We played good and created some chances but it was a difficult game.
