Egypt criticised after singers jailed for belly dancing video

In the clip, they are seen lip-synching and smiling as the dancer, in a long dress and jacket, performs her moves.

The video was a YouTube hit in 2020 and has clocked up millions of views.

But the court in Alexandria found the men guilty of "violating family values" in what is being seen as part of a wider crackdown on artistic expression.

They were also convicted of profiting from the video starring the dancer Lordiana, who has become well-known in Egypt for her slinky moves.

Egypt revives ancient road connecting Luxor and Karnak

The procession to reopen the 2.7km road included a reenactment of the ancient Opet festival, where statues of Theban deities were paraded annually during the New Kingdom era in celebration of fertility and the flooding of the Nile.

President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi marched along the road at the start of the ceremony. Pharaonic chariots and more than 400 young performers dressed in pharaonic costumes paraded along the avenue.

Robot artist Ai-Da released by Egyptian border guards

Ai-Da, named for the mathematician Ada Lovelace, was seized by border agents last week who feared her robotics may have been hiding covert spy tools.

Officials held the robot for 10 days, imperilling plans to show her work at the Great Pyramid of Giza on Thursday.

The UK's Embassy in Cairo told the BBC that it is "glad" the case is resolved.

New species of ancient four-legged whale discovered in Egypt

The fossil of the amphibious Phiomicetus anubis was originally discovered in Egypt's Western Desert.

Its skull resembles that of Anubis, the ancient Egyptian jackal-headed god of the dead after which it was named.

The ancestors of modern whales developed from deer-like mammals that lived on land over the course of 10 million years.

Fire at detention centre kills six teenagers

The blaze broke out on Thursday at the facility in the Al-Marg district of the capital, Cairo.

The head of the facility was detained as prosecutors investigated the fire.

It was not immediately clear what caused the blaze, but an initial investigation blamed an electric short-circuit, according to local media.

The fire followed a fight between two children inside the facility, officials told the Associated Press news agency.

Masrawy, an Arabic-Egyptian news portal, said the blaze was confined to one wing of the facility.

At least 19 killed in Egypt train crash

Carriages derailed and overturned when two trains collided near the city of Tahta in Sohag province on Friday.

Officials originally put the death toll at 32, but later revised that figure.

An investigation has been launched into the crash, with President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi pledging tough punishment for those responsible.

"Anyone who caused this painful accident through negligence or corruption, or anything similar, must receive a deterrent punishment without exception or delay," he tweeted.

Effort to refloat wedged container ship continues

Canal officials said some progress had been made, however, and more tugboats were joining the effort on Sunday.

Alternative arrangements are being put in place in case the operation fails.

Egypt's President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi has ordered preparations to lighten the load of the stranded ship.

Egypt sarcophagus: Mystery black tomb opened in Alexandria

Could it contain the remains of ancient Greek leader Alexander the Great, or (less appealingly) a deadly curse?

According to experts who have now unsealed it, it's a no to both.

Instead, it revealed three skeletons and red-brown sewage water, which gave off an unbearable stench.

Egypt's Ministry of Antiquities had appointed a committee of archaeologists to open the relic, which was unearthed at a construction site.

Salah rejects talk of Egypt rift

Egypt's fate was confirmed on Wednesday as Uruguay beat Saudi Arabia 1-0 to ensure both the South American nation and hosts Russia will progress to the last 16 from Group A.

Having watched a 1-0 defeat to Uruguay from the bench, Salah made his first appearance since suffering an injury in the Champions League final as Egypt's hopes were all but ended in a 3-1 loss to Russia on Tuesday.

Salah helpless as Russia march on

Whatever was to unfold at Krestovsky Stadium – ultimately almost certainly a swift World Cup exit via a chastening 3-1 defeat for his country – Salah would be in no position to influence the outcome.

Having scattered defences across England and Europe throughout a dizzying 2017-18 campaign that yielded 44 goals, here Salah was on the periphery. A powerless, forlorn victim of circumstance.
