Lou Grant and Up actor, Ed Asner dies aged 91

The actor, whose roles also included voicing the lead in the Pixar film Up, passed away "peacefully" on Sunday morning, his family said.

"Words cannot express the sadness we feel. With a kiss on your head-Goodnight dad. We love you."

The character Lou Grant was first introduced as Mary Richards's boss on The Mary Tyler Moore Show in the 1970s.

Grant, the irascible editor of the of the fictional Los Angeles Tribune, then became a character in a show in his own right from 1977 to 1982.

Norman Gimbel, award-winning lyricist, dies aged 91

Gimbel's work included Killing Me Softly with his Song - recorded by Roberta Flack, the Fugees and others - and the theme to TV series Happy Days.

He also wrote the English lyrics to the Brazilian bossa nova melody, The Girl from Ipanema.

Gimbel died on 19 December at his home in Montecito, California, his son Tony Gimbel told The Hollywood Reporter.

Music rights organisation BMI said it was "greatly saddened" by news of Gimbel's death. It described him as a "truly gifted and prolific writer" who would be greatly missed by friends and fans.
