Fire at detention centre kills six teenagers

The blaze broke out on Thursday at the facility in the Al-Marg district of the capital, Cairo.

The head of the facility was detained as prosecutors investigated the fire.

It was not immediately clear what caused the blaze, but an initial investigation blamed an electric short-circuit, according to local media.

The fire followed a fight between two children inside the facility, officials told the Associated Press news agency.

Masrawy, an Arabic-Egyptian news portal, said the blaze was confined to one wing of the facility.

Abuse allegations at Australian detention centre 'unfounded': Nauru president

However, his government will look into the claims, Mr Baron Waqa told Channel NewsAsia on Tuesday (Aug 16).

Last week, The Guardian published more than 2,000 case reports detailing allegations of abuse faced by asylum seekers being processed by the Australian government on the remote Pacific Island of Nauru.

They include reported incidences of assaults, sexual assaults and self-harm - many involving children - between 2013 and 2015.

Australian senator calls for change to Nauru policy

Senator Sarah Hanson-Young says Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull must show leadership and compassion by releasing all children and families from Australian run detention camp on Nauru.

She says Australia is ready for compassion and it is time children were taken off of Nauru, once and for all.

Ms Hanson-Young says there has been shocking evidence about children being exposed to abuse from guards on Nauru and this is an opportunity for the new Prime Minister to draw a line in the sand.

Transfield Services apologises for surveillance of Greens senator

In June the Immigration Department confirmed a contractor had been disciplined over the spying incident in December 2013.

The Wilson Security supervisor was disciplined for tailing Senator Hanson-Young's car after she left Australia's immigration detention facilities on the Pacific island.

Transfield has been giving evidence about conditions on Nauru during a Senate inquiry in Canberra.
