Birmingham bliss for Pacific athletes rated as one of Pacific’s top sports stories

Samoa won the region's only gold, through weightlifter Don Opolege and the nation's lifters also won three silver medals, and there was also Samoan silver in heavyweight boxing.

Fiji won four medals, two of them in the rugby sevens, but there was some disappointment that neither team could win their respective finals.

Weightlifting brought the only medals for Papua New Guinea and Nauru, Vanuatu gained a bronze from beach volleyball, and one of the stories of the games was when Niue gained its first-ever medal with a boxing bronze.

Nauru Commonwealth Games athletes undergo Covid-19 test

The team of over 20 team members consisting of officials and athletes were flown in on a Nauru Airlines flight.

They represented the country at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England.

The team brought home a bronze medal which was won and proudly worn by the superstar weightlifter Maximina Uepa.

Nauru continues to participate at the Commonwealth Games after making its debut in 1990.

     

2022 Commonwealth Games comes to an end

The closing ceremony took place at Birmingham's Alexander Stadium this morning with performances from artists including UB40, Apache Indian, Beverley Knight, Dexys Midnight Runners, Goldie, Jacob Banks, Jaykae and Jorja Smith.

The ceremony also included a tradtional handover of the Commonwealth Games flag to Australia which will is set to host the next Games in 2026.

After a record-breaking Games of both individual and team success, New Zealand cyclist Aaron Gate took on the roleas the country's flagbearer.

Pacific's impressive Games haul

Nauru scoops first Commonwealth Games medal in Weightlifting

Uepa scooped the country’s first medal in the Women’s 76kg final yesterday.

The 19-year-old lifted 90kg in the first snatch attempt, 94kg in the second and 96kg in the third attempt.

Uepa went on to lift 115kg in the first clean and jerk attempt and 119kg in the second attempt.

She lifted a total of 215kg in the event.

The gold medal was won by Canada’s Maya Laylor while Nigeria’s Taiwo Liadi settled for silver.

     

Nauru lifter Nancy Abouke placed 5th in the Women’s 71kg final

Abouke lifted 87kg in her first snatch attempt and 110kg in her first clean and jerk attempt.

The category’s gold medal went to Sarah Davis of England.

Canada’s Alexis Ashworth claimed silver and bronze was won by Harjinder Kaur of India.

Nauru’s Bernice Detundamo came in 12th in the Women’s 64kg weightlifting category final.

     

Pacific countries stamp their mark at the Commonwealth Games

Leading the region and the overall medal tally is Australia with 31 gold, 20 silver and 20 bronze medals.

New Zealand is in third place with 13 gold, 7 silver and 4 bronze medals.

Fiji is currently in 17th place with 2 silver medals.

Both in 20th place with 1 silver medal each are Papua New Guinea and Samoa.

72 countries are now heading into the sixth day of competitions.

     

Nauru’s Christon Amram loses in his first Commonwealth boxing outing

Amram went down to Charlie Senior of Australia 5-0 in the Men’s over 54kg-57kg featherweight division.

Senior proved to be too strong for Amran after dominating all three rounds.

Amram is a gold medalist from the 2019 Pacific Games.

     

Fiji 7s and Fijiana settle for Silver medal in Birmingham

Fiji’s wait for a gold medal in 7s continues.

Blitzbok raced to an early lead and pressured the national side to making many unforced errors.

Muller Du Plessis ran in two tries to help his side.

The other tries were scored by JC Pretorious and Shaun Williams as they led 17-0 at half time.

Skipper Waisea Nacuqu scored the lone try for Fiji in the second spell but it wasn’t enough as South Africa proved too strong in defense.

Boxer Colan Caleb to begin Nauru’s Commonwealth Games campaign

Fighting in the Men’s 60kg Light Welterweight division, Caleb will go up against Jonas Junias from Namibia.

The fight is scheduled to start at 11pm (Nauru Time).

The second athlete to compete and in the same sport is the team’s flag bearer, Christon Amram.

The 2019 Pacific Games gold medalist will be fighting Australia's Charlie Senior in the Men's Featherweight 57kg.

Nauru team is comprised of 5 sporting federations with over 20 team members consisting of officials and athletes.
