Band ready for backlash over eco-friendly world tour

It's part of a 12-point plan to cut their carbon footprint, two years after the band pledged not to tour until they could do so in a more sustainable way.

Singer Chris Martin told the BBC in his first interview about the plans that fans will be on "kinetic flooring".

"When they move, they power the concert," he said.

"And we have bicycles too that do the same thing," Martin told BBC entertainment correspondent Colin Paterson.

"The more people move, the more they're helping. You know when the frontman says, 'We need you to jump up and down'?

Coldplay's Chris Martin says lockdown made him confront his ego

"Last year was a quite an eye opener," he told BBC Radio 2. "I was like, 'Who am I without Wembley Stadium saying, 'you're awesome'?"

"I'm trying in my life right now to not attach too much to being a pop star. I'm trying not to get my self worth from external validation."

He was speaking as Coldplay unveiled their new single, Higher Power.

They premiered the 80s-inspired pop song on board the International Space Station overnight - teaming up with French astronaut Thomas Pesquet, who beamed the music back to Earth by satellite.

Coldplay announce new album in a letter to a fan

"For the last 100 years or thereabouts, we have been working on a thing called Everyday Life," said the band in the typewritten message.

It will be a double album, split into two halves, called Sunrise and Sunset, and released on 22 November.

The letter was signed by all four members of the band - but the recipient initially thought it was a hoax.
