Spain beat Canada 5-0

Spain beat Canada 5-0 in this afternoon's first U-20 FIFA World Cup match at the Bava park in Port Moresby.

The Spaniards dominated the first half in its match against Canada at the Bava park.

With the setting sun behind them, they registered their first goal in the opening minutes of the match with a kick from number 9, Lucia Gomez.

The side captained by No. 7, Nahikari Garcia,  had more possession of the ball in the first half than the Canadians.

Canada's defenders came under heavy attack in the first half with Spain having more attempts at the goalmouth.

The Spaniards found the net again at the 30th minute with a kick from No. 20, Lucia Garcia.

The scorching sun's heat was not kind on the girls, who just had to have a water break before proceeding with the rest of the match.

Spain had more attempts after its second goal but Canada's goalkeeper, Rylee Foster, was able to hold off more goals.

A cooler second half saw both Spain and Canada start the match off with equal opportunities at the ball.

The light easterly breeze, backed by support from the crowd, saw a better Canadian side take on the field, eager to get points on the board. However, the Spaniards proved to be a better side.

Spain's defense was tested early by Canada in the second half with a penalty kick from the side line, which Spain's keeper Maria Quinones managed to hold off.

But it was not long before Spain's No.4 Aitana Bonmati scored their third goal in the 48th minute.

A penalty to Canada in the 50th minute saw Canada's No 6, Deanne Rose's attempt at goal fail before double substitutes took place for each team.

Impressive ball work by Spain's captain Nahikari Garcia to Canada's goal mouth was let down by her counterpart No. 10 Andrea Falcon, when it was stopped by Canada keeper Foster.

Canada's No.19  Alexandria Lamontagne found the Spaniards’ net but was disallowed because she was offside.

Good ball works by Spain's No.10  Andrea Falcon from the corner later found No 12. Patricia Guijarro, who scored their fourth goal, extending their lead further.

An additional time of 5 minutes was allowed after the 90th minute, which was utilised well by Spain's No.20 Lucia Garcia, who scored her second goal.

Player of the match went to Spain's No. 4 Aitana Bonmati.

Japan will take on Nigeria at 7pm.
