Mayweather-McGregor ticket sales top $76 million

Despite more than 7000 tickets going unsold, the Floyd Mayweather-Conor McGregor fight still raked in more than US$55 million (NZ$76m) from ticket sales.

Mayweather scored a 10th-round TKO victory over the UFC star to move his boxing record to 50-0 at the August 26 bout at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

The Nevada State Athletic Commission released the figures for ticket sales on Thursday (NZ time), which showed a live gate of US$55,414,865.79, ESPN reported.

That was made from the sale of 13,094, well short of selling out the 20,500-capacity arena, with 137 complimentary tickets given away to VIPs.

The average price for a ticket came in at US$4232, with US$500 the cheapest, while some shelled out more than US$10,000 for premium seats.

Even though there were still plenty of empty seats, the high price of tickets meant it came in at No 2 overall for the highest gate prices in combat sports history.

The Mayweather v Manny Pacquiao superfight of May 2015 still holds top spot after it made US$72,198,500 from the sale of 16,219 tickets at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas.

Mayweather fights comprise five of the top six gates in Nevada history, with his fight against Canelo Alvarez in 2013 claiming third spot with more than US$20m.

The McGregor fight may not have broken a gate record, but it could still claim the pay-per-view record after 4.6 million units were sold in the United States, ESPN reported.

The figures, released by Showtime PPV last week, meant it would be no worse than second on the all-time list.
