Nauru commemorates World Aids Day

Nauru commemorated World Aids Day with a walkathon.

The walk commenced at Anibare Lodge and ended at the health clinic at Anibare boat harbor where participants enjoyed refreshments of water and fruits.

World Aids Day is commemorated on 1 December each year.

It’s an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV, to show support for people living with HIV, and to commemorate those who have died from an AIDS-related illness.

According to the Nauru Global AIDS Progress Report 2015, the island nation registered the first case of HIV in a Nauru citizen in 2014.

“Historically Nauru had no registered HIV cases amongst the local population with 2 expatriates and 1 foreigner tested positive while the 3rd one who was a crew of a visiting ship had full blown AIDS and died on the island years ago. HIV testing is available and is frequently promoted on the island.”
