New book says Australia and NZ need new approach to Forum

A new book on Pacific geopolitics says Fiji's diplomacy since its suspension from the Pacific Islands Forum has shaken up the region.

'The New Pacific Diplomacy', published by the Australian National University, has contributions from a range of academics, journalists, political leaders and other stakeholders.

An editor, Associate Professor Sandra Tarte says the Pacific Islands Forum will have to adapt, and Australia and New Zealand may have to tone down their influence.

"I don't think the regional architecture is going to fundamentally change in terms of membership of the Forum, but I do think that things will be done in a somewhat different way and Australia and New Zealand perhaps not as much the prominent players as they were."

Associate Professor Tarte edited the book with Associate Professor Gregory Fry.

They are both from the University of the South Pacific in Suva, and say they hope USP will also publish the book, which can already be downloaded online.
