Nauruan powerlifters aim higher after breaking world record

Nauruan powerlifters Deamo Baguga and Erving Harris have set their goals higher in the sport of powerlifting after breaking world records at the annual Fitness and Health Expo held in Sydney, Australia.

Baguga was up against some strong opponents in the 83kg category, and he was determined to break the world record.

He set a new world record in the deadlift with his lift of 316.5kg. He benched 140kg and his squat was 270kg giving him an overall of 726.5kg.

Harris competed in world master 2, 74kg class and in the squat category he set a new world record with his lift of 205kg. In the bench press he lifted 100kg and dead lifted 190kg, which gave him an overall score of 495kg.

Baguga and Harris travelled to Sydney with fellow powerlifter, Steven, team manager, Claudette Wharton and coaches Gerard Jones, Jason Wharton and Langa Ollson for the competition which was held from October 16-18.

Wharton, who is the president of the Nauru Powerlifting Federation, has been impressed with the outstanding performance of the powerlifters.

Baguga and Harris have done their homeland Nauru proud.

They said they have received tremendous support from their coaches, families, friends and major sponsors Digicel, Pacific Rock, Nauru Airlines and Sterling.
