Home is where learning begins

They were excited and eager to learn more, even though their school closing ceremony was almost at hand.

For Nicanor-Jose Berobero and Kayla Schmid at the ATS barracks outside Port Moresby, early learning at home has enabled them to spell, write and pronounce words very well in preparation for their formal schooling next year.

Their teacher, Diane Kawaneva, said early childhood learning is very important as it prepares them very well to go into formal education.

“Children as young as these absorb information fast and that is why early childhood learning is important,” reiterates Kawaneva.

She encourages parents to start teaching their children at home before going to mainstream schooling as it sets the children’s minds straight to focus on what is proper to absorb.

The four months of home schooling for Nicanor-Jose and Kayla, together with others, have paid off as they can now read numbers, alphabetical orders, differentiate between colours, shapes and know exactly which day it is.

Their closing ceremony on Wednesday was overwhelming and they are now looking forward to beginning their formal school year in 2017.
