Head for success at university

More and more Pasifika students are taking that leap into tertiary education but if you are heading off to university this year, Massey University’s National Pasifika Recruitment Advisor, Faye Iaone-Hunt has 5 tips to put students on the path to success.

#1 Don’t leave it to the last minute.

Faye says “It can seem a bit overwhelming applying for courses so my advice is to pick up the phone and get some help. There are recruitment advisors at university ready to help you navigate the enrolment process. Massey University has ‘Get it Sorted” days where you can go on campus and get personal assistance. We’ll literally sit with students and take them through the process step by step”.

#2 Be proactive.

Faye says “Uni is big and so being proactive is essential in everything from finding out where your classes are to getting extra help with your assignments. I’m amazed how many Pasifika students don’t get the help that’s on offer at university simply because they were afraid to ask – so don’t be shy.”

#3 Get involved.

Faye says “The more you get involved with university life the more you get out of it. So plan to attend orientation events and find out about the activities on campus so you can join a club, take up a new sport and generally get involved and make new friends?.

The Massey PI club in Palmerston North is a great support for students and there are other Pasifika support networks on other campuses too.”

#4 Take the tour.

Faye says “They might not sound that exciting but campus and library tours can really make a difference to your university experience. Understanding how the library works and what services are available really help your success at Uni.”

#5 Get into the mindset.

Faye says “ Uni is more intense than school. The semesters are shorter and there’s less time to do everything. So get yourself into the mindset of working before you start. And keep your eye on the end goal – your degree will be worth it. “
