Digicel Nauru invest AUD$1.2m in Network Infrastructure

Digicel Nauru Corporation announced details of its infrastructure investment in the Digicel Mobile Network.

During its Financial Year ending March 31st 2016, Digicel invested AUD$1.2m.

The investment was part of Digicel’s Network upgrade program that saw it replace 2 mobile towers as well as build a new tower behind the RON Hospital.

This brings the total number of towers now on island to eight (8) giving 100% coverage to customers around the island.

Ben Kealy, Digicel Nauru CEO, said that “along with the new and replacement towers on island, we have invested in extra technical staff on island, increased our data capacity to cater for increased demand on data usage and backed up all our sites with Generators and battery banks.  It’s a significant amount of monies to invest and shows Digicel’s commitment to our 20% stakeholder - Government and to the people of Nauru”.

Expressing his appreciation with the recent investment from Digicel, Minister of Telecoms in Nauru, Shadlog Bernicke said, ‘’it is part of the Governments drive and strategy to offer a better mobile experience to all customers on the island of Nauru.  Working with our partner Digicel, we plan further investment during 2016 and 2017 as we start migrating WiMAX customers over to a new 3G+ unwired Internet service.  This move and further investment will lay the foundation as we look and work towards hopefully moving to a 4G service by 2018’’.
