Collingwood's Jeremy Howe insists he broke finger playing frisbee, not cricket

Collingwood officials are insisting recruit Jeremy Howe broke his finger with a frisbee, not during the Twenty20 match he played in last week.

There were reports on Tuesday that Howe had caught his middle finger in the ground while playing catch with his girlfriend and dog last Tuesday.

He underwent surgery, where medical staff inserted two screws in the lower part of his finger.

But it has since emerged that Howe had earlier played for Koonung Heights against Vermont in a Twenty20 match.

Some reports suggested he dropped a catch then left the ground holding his hand.

But on Wednesday Collingwood insisted that while Howe did play cricket that day, it was throwing a frisbee that caused the injury.

Collingwood director of football Neil Balme was defensive when he appeared on SEN radio.

"I can only report what he told me, and I do understand that he played cricket which was OK, but he didn't break his finger playing cricket," he said.

Balme said Howe had showed up at the cricket not expecting to play, but had ended up acting as a fill-in player.

"I can only believe what he tells me and I chose to do so."

Howe, who was traded from Melbourne, had already been battling foot soreness and was unlikely to be ready for round one.
