Apple sets new record with 13 million iPhones sold

Apple has a set a new record by selling more than 13 million iPhones over the iPhone 6S' opening weekend, which means approximately 3,000 phones were being sold every minute.

"Sales for the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus have been phenomenal, blowing past any previous first weekend sales results in Apple's history," CEO Tim Cook said in a statement. "Customers' feedback is incredible and they are loving 3D Touch and Live Photos."

Last year, Apple sold 10 million units and prior to that 9 million units in 2013. This year Apple released the new iPhone model in China on day one, which helped increase its sale numbers significantly.

Apple also announced Monday that the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus will be available in 40 additional countries starting on Oct. 9. Some of those countries include Mexico, Italy, Russia, Taiwan and Spain. The iPhone 6S will be available in 130 countries by the end of the year.

Two weeks ago Apple announced that pre-order sales for the iPhone 'S' model were already on track to beat last year's record.

Apple's two new iPhone models have new features such as 3D Touch, 4K video and Live Images. The new devices also come in a new color, Rose Gold.
