Aguero opened the scoring in the 27th minute, heading home Kevin de Bruyne's superb free-kick and doubled the lead within four minutes when he converted David Silva's teasing cross from close range.

City were in exuberant mood and added a third before the break when the excellent Gabriel Jesus latched on to Aguero's cute pass to stroke home in the 38th minute.

After Nicolas Otamendi headed in a fourth in the 63rd minute, Aguero completed his treble with a neat finish at the end of a sensational run.

The experienced defender was handed a rare start as Antonio Conte made nine changes compared to the team that clinched the Premier League title against West Brom on Friday and he enjoyed an eventful first half.

Terry opened the scoring in the 22nd minute with a finish from close range, only to inadvertently set up Etienne Capoue for the equaliser with a poor clearance two minutes later.

Cesar Azpilicueta and Michy Batshuayi then struck either side of half-time to hand Chelsea a two-goal lead, only for Daryl Janmaat to pull one back.

Sadio Mane scored twice and Philippe Coutinho, Emre Can, Roberto Firmino and Giorginio Wijnaldum got the others as Liverpool moved one point above Chelsea.

Coutinho had already hit the woodwork before Mane got things rolling with the opener and Coutinho and Can made it 3-0 at halftime.

Roberto Firmino added a fourth in the second half before Mane got his second and though Daryl Janmaat grabbed a consolation, Wijnaldum scored the sixth to send them top.

Earlier, Arsenal missed the chance to go top when they were held to a 1-1 draw by Tottenham at the Emirates.

Goals from Etienne Capoue, Juan Zuniga and a stoppage time penalty from Troy Deeney overwhelmed the visitors, who had levelled with a solitary strike from Marcus Rashford, in Sunday's big match.
