Nadal and Federer team up for Europe

Nadal created history by defeating Russian Daniil Medvedev in the Australian Open final to claim a men's record 21st major title and move one ahead of Federer and Novak Djokovic, who were both missing in Melbourne.

The Spaniard, who has twice played at the Laver Cup, paired up with Federer for their first and only doubles match together at the inaugural edition of the event in Prague in 2017.

"I suggested to Roger we should play doubles together in London and he seems keen, so now we just need to persuade our captain Bjorn (Borg)," said Nadal.

Roger Federer and Johanna Konta withdraw from Olympics

Federer, 39, has suffered a setback with an existing knee injury.

The Swiss legend won doubles gold at Beijing 2008 and silver in 2012, losing the singles final to Andy Murray.

Konta, 30, has contracted Covid after withdrawing from Wimbledon when a member of her team tested positive and she was identified as a close contact.

Federer, now ranked number nine in the world, had two knee surgeries in 2020.

Abrupt end to Federer's 22nd Wimbledon

Before this fortnight, 14th seed Hurkacz had won only four matches on grass but no one would have guessed his lack of grasscourt pedigree after witnessing the stupendous display he put in against his own childhood idol.

All the cheers and standing ovations in the world could not save Federer from the Centre Court mauling as it seemed his 39-year-old body finally said enough is enough.

Federer auctions off kit

Among the items going under the hammer on 23 June are clothing and racquets the Swiss great used in his 2009 French Open final win over Robin Soderling - his sole Roland Garros title - and the smart white cardigan he donned for his 2012 Wimbledon final win over Andy Murray.

The price tag estimates for the 20 lots being auctioned by Christie's range from £3,000 to £70,000, with the clothing and racquet he used in his victory over great rival Rafael Nadal in the 2007 Wimbledon final expected to fetch £30,000-£50,000.

Federer wins first match in over a year

The 39-year-old Swiss had not played a competitive match for more than a year having undergone two knee surgeries last year.

Federer beat British number one Dan Evans 7-6, 3-6 7-5.

Djokovic breaks Federer's record for most weeks as ATP No. 1

Djokovic is in his 311th week in the top spot, one more than Federer has spent there.

“Big day today,” Djokovic tweeted Monday.

The 33-year-old from Serbia first reached No. 1 on July 4, 2011, a day after he won Wimbledon for the first time by beating top-ranked Rafael Nadal in the final. Djokovic's ascent represented the first time in nearly 7 1/2 years that a man other than Federer or Nadal was No. 1.

Djokovic equals Fed record

Djokovic's ninth Australian Open title last month guaranteed that he would surpass Federer's record next week.

Having reached another milestone in his illustrious career, Djokovic had said he would look to adjust his calendar and make overhauling Federer and Rafa Nadal's joint-record of 20 Grand Slam titles his top priority.

This is Djokovic's fifth stint atop the world rankings. The 33-year-old reclaimed the top spot from Nadal in February last year and finished as the year-end number one for the sixth time - tying the record set by American great Pete Sampras.

Federer wants ATP-WTA merger

Both the men's (ATP) and women's (WTA) professional games are suspended until at least mid-July due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Swiss great Federer pondered the possibility of bringing both tours under the governance of a singular body with a post on Twitter.

"Just wondering am I the only one thinking that now is the time for men's and women's tennis to be united and come together as one?" Federer asked.

Federer keeping his fans happy

The 20-times Grand Slam tennis champion last played at the semi-finals of the Australian Open, where he lost to eventual champion Novak Djokovic, before undergoing keyhole surgery on his knee in February.

He is supposed to return to playing in time for the grasscourt season in June.

"Making sure I still remember how to hit trick shots #TennisAtHome," Federer tweeted along with the video, which showed the Swiss moving around seamlessly amid snowfall.

Federer: Nadal CT match is special

Swiss great Federer will face off against his most famous rival in the sixth edition of the Match for Africa series, organised by the 20-time grand slam winner's foundation.

Federer will team up with Microsoft owner Bill Gates to face Nadal and Daily Show host Trevor Noah, who was born in South Africa, for a doubles encounter before the two tennis greats meet in a singles match.

When planning to host the event in Cape Town, Federer only had one opponent in mind and said he had been trying to enlist Nadal's help for some time.
