Apple has warned that Pope Francis's impending visit to New York could stop the city's residents receiving their iPhone 6S pre-orders in time for this Friday's launch.

With traffic restrictions being placed on the bustling city during the pontiff's stay, it is expected that couriers will be unable to meet all delivery needs on the day.

The Survivors Network of Those Abused by Priests said bishops had displayed "cowardice and callousness" in response to victims who came forward. The group said they "hide behind expensive lawyers and public relations professionals" instead of fully confronting the scope of the problem within the church.

Anne Barrett Doyle is co-director of BishopAccountability.org, an advocacy group that collects records on abusive priests from around the world. She calls the pope's remarks "distressing and quite off-base."

The pope moved slowly past throngs lining his route from the White House, waving from an outfitted Jeep that is open on the sides.

At one point, a young girl carrying a yellow banner got outside the police barricade holding the crowds back and tried to approach the popemobile.

She shied back when a bodyguard came near to pick her up and bring her to Francis.

Pope to canonize 18th-century missionary; not everyone happy

Pope Francis planned to canonize Junipero Serra during a Mass on Wednesday outside the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, the first canonization on U.S. soil.

The pope announced in January that Serra, a Franciscan friar from Spain revered by Roman Catholics for his missionary work, would become a saint. Francis fast-tracked his canonization by eliminating the need to show proof of two miracles. Serra was beatified in 1988.

The Vatican described the 40-minute meeting at Castro's residence as informal and familial, with an exchange of books and discussion about big issues facing humanity, including Francis' recent encyclical on the environment and the global economic system.

Unlike the 2012 visit of Benedict XVI, when Castro peppered the German theologian with questions, the meeting with Francis was more of a conversation, according to papal Spokesman, the Reverend Frederico Lombardi.

People also lined the streets, many using umbrellas to shade themselves in the heat, as Francis travelled to the plaza in his popemobile.

He is the first pope to visit Cuba's third-largest city.

Francis was later due to travel to Santiago in south-eastern Cuba - before flying Into Washington on Tuesday for the US leg of his two-nation trip.
