Brisbane named preferred 2032 Olympic Games host

IOC president Thomas Bach said the body’s executive had accepted the recommendation of its Future Hosts Commission to install Brisbane as a non-binding preferred candidate. Bach stressed it was not a final decision and the matter had been the subject of “intensive debate” before being finalised.

IOC and FIFA Presidents discuss situation facing sport at meeting in Lausanne

IOC President Thomas Bach met his counterpart at FIFA Gianni Infantino in person at the Olympic Museum, which reopened on Tuesday June 9, after a closure forced by the outbreak of COVID-19.

During their meeting, Presidents Bach and Infantino discussed the importance of sport during the coronavirus pandemic, and how the global situation would force sport to adapt in the short and longer term.

Infantino was elected as a member of the IOC during its 135th Session in January.

IOC respond to Turkish criticism

Just three days of action were possible at the Copper Box Arena before the competition was brought to a premature halt on March 16 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Turkish Boxing Federation accused the IOC Boxing Task Force of being irresponsible for allowing the European qualifier to go ahead in the circumstances, with reports saying two of their fighters and a coach have tested positive.

While expressing sympathy for those who have been taken ill, the task force feels there is nothing to suggest they were infected during the competition.

IOC welcomes N and S Korea proposal

Amid a tense political stand-off over the North's nuclear and missile programmes, it had been unclear whether the country would have any competitors in Pyeongchang.

The two parties held talks on Tuesday in Panmunjom, in the Korean peninsula's demilitarised area, after which it was agreed North Korea would send a delegation to the Games, which begin on February 9.

In July last year, South Korea pledged to encourage their neighbours to participate, in a move encouraged by the IOC, which also welcomed the latest developments.

IOC set out process to choose new events for Tokyo 2020

Discussions have already begun between the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and individual International Federations, IOC sports director Kit McConnell revealed here. 

These talks are due to be “accelerated” following Rio 2016.

The IOC Executive Board on Wednesday (June 1) recommended baseball and softball, karate, skateboarding, sport climbing and surfing to be added to the programme at Tokyo 2020.

The decision is expected to be approved by the full IOC membership at its Session in Rio de Janeior between August 1 and 4.
