Grammys: Ed Sheeran overlooked while Jay Z tops nominations

The star was edged out of contention by Bruno Mars and Kendrick Lamar, who each received multiple nominations.

Jay Z leads with eight nominations, including his first ever appearance in the album of the year list for 4:44, which comes 21 years after his debut.

Sheeran did receive several nominations in the pop categories, however.

Shape of You is up for best pop solo performance, while ÷ is shortlisted for best pop album.

Lady Gaga is also relegated to the pop categories for her recent album, Joanne, while Katy Perry fails to receive any nominations at all.

Grammys 2017: The rise of Chance the Rapper

It made music history at the ceremony in Los Angeles, winning best rap album.

The unsigned 23-year-old, whose real name is Chancelor Bennett, also won best new artist and best rap performance for No Problem.

"This is for every indie artist, everybody who has been doing this mixtape stuff for a long time," he said.

It's a huge rise for the artist, who's gone from releasing his first mixtape to Grammy-winner in five years.

"I didn't think I was going to get this one so I don't have cool stuff to say," he said after picking up best rap album.

Is racism why Adele beat Beyoncé at the Grammys?

When the British pop star tearfully accepted the ceremony's top award Sunday night, she shined a spotlight on the woman she said she has loved since she was 11 years old.

"The artist of my life is Beyoncé, and this album to me, the 'Lemonade' album, was just so monumental," Adele said.

Certainly for her diehard fan base known as the Beyhive -- and for many music critics -- Beyoncé's "Lemonade" was a creative masterpiece.

But with its racial themes and imagery, some are questioning if the project was "just too black" for Grammy voters.

Frank Ocean shuns Grammys

That's because the singer decided not to submit his long awaited sophomore album, "Blonde," for consideration.

Ocean, who rarely grants interviews, told the New York Times that despite having won two Grammys in 2013, he's not interested this time around.

"That institution certainly has nostalgic importance," he said. "It just doesn't seem to be representing very well for people who come from where I come from, and hold down what I hold down."
