Fiji measles: Two more cases confirmed

The government said the latest two cases include a three-month-old from Wailali settlement in Wainadoi and a 17-month-old from Wailekutu in Lami.

The 18 cases are from the Serua/Namosi subdivision, Suva and Rewa areas.

The health ministry said two days into a mass vaccination campaign had seen over 45,000 people immunised in the central division.

Meanwhile, all sporting tournaments and events in Fiji have been called off due to the measles outbreak in the country.

The Health Ministry said the latest victim is a 25-year-old pregnant woman who was admitted to hospital on Friday.

A health official told RNZ Pacific this week there were reports of shortages of the measles vaccine at health centres and clinics.

A shipment of the vaccine was expected to arrive from India next week, the official said.

The Health Ministry has been prioritising the vaccine for those in affected areas, children aged between six months and three years and people travelling overseas.
