Nauru Customs Service receives narcotics kits from Australian Government

The kits were handed over by High Commissioner Angela Tierney to Deputy Secretary for Custom Jennifer Clark in a brief ceremony at the airport on Friday April 9th.

Nauru Media News – NTV reports the narcotic identification system will enable Nauru customs service test suspect substances being imported into Nauru.

Now that Nauru Customs have been armed with these kits, they have an array of tools that they can use in their compliance efforts.

Australian sentenced to death in China for drug smuggling

The man was named in Australian media as Karm or Cam Gilespie.

He is believed to have been arrested at an airport in 2013 with 7.5kg (16 Ibs) of methamphetamine, also known as ice, in his luggage, the Sydney Morning Herald newspaper reports.

Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said it was "deeply saddened to hear of the verdict".

Australia gives additional funding to assist Nauru Port Project preparation

The project is currently supported by a $900,000 technical assistance from the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

The $79.59 million project, which will enhance port operations in Nauru through structural improvements and capacity building of relevant agencies, will be financed by ADB, the Government of Australia, the Green Climate Fund, and the Government of Nauru. The project is scheduled for discussion by ADB’s Board of Directors in early 2018.

Aus govt tells refugees on Manus they can transfer to Nauru

The centre's legal advocacy director Daniel Webb said the government was bulldozing the Manus detention centre but the men inside had nowhere to go.

The move comes exactly three weeks before its closure, which was declared unlawful by PNG's highest court in April last year, and follows two recent deaths and a spate of violent attacks against refugees held on the island.

Behrouz Boochani, an Iranian journalist held on Manus, said people were really frustrated and disappointed by this news.

New regional initiative targets improvement in health service delivery

This programme will be implemented through a partnership with the Pacific Community (SPC), the Fiji National University’s College of Medicine, Nursing and Health Science, and the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons.

In the new Pacific Regional Clinical Services and Workforce Improvement Programme, SPC will play a central role in supporting Pacific Island countries (PICs) to work together to improve regional governance for clinical services and health workforce development.
