In a statement, the airline said: “Air Niugini is committed to ensuring the highest quality, on time service to all passengers and will continuously review its business to improve efficiencies.

“Our partners and the airline have invested heavily in setting up operations to achieve our goal of opening the Chinese market to Papua New Guinea. It is our desire to complete this venture at the earliest possible opportunity. 

It will also consider whether the country’s year as chair of APEC delivered the desired economic results in 2018 and beyond.

Nominations are now being accepted for the 2018 APEC Science Prize for Innovation, Research and Education, or ASPIRE Prize, under the theme Smart Technologies for Healthy Societies.

Over the next 12 days, officials meeting in Papua New Guinea’s capital, Port Moresby, will introduce new joint initiatives to empower their people to tap digital breakthroughs and the opportunities for better jobs, wages and quality of life they can provide.

This meeting underlined the economic clout of a regional trading block that accounts for 49% of global commerce.

Yet, for many delegates, the media and commentators on the fringe, the most interesting and talked about leader is still a "President in waiting", a man who wasn't even here in Lima.

The Governor said APEC in Papua New Guinea will be a series of national events that should not be politicised because there are clear positive outcomes to be gained.

“There should be unity behind APEC because there is no doubt that clear positive outcomes bill be gained from businesses around the nation,” Sir Peter said.

“Through APEC we have access to capacity building projects that will help people in rural areas.

“These are our SMEs and our sectors such as tourism, agriculture and marine resources.

Setting the tone, the APEC Policy Partnership on Women and the Economy began a two-day meeting in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea on Sunday May 1st.

Emmeline Verzosa, the Executive Director of the Philippine Commission on Women, said the group will draft new plans and projects that empower more women to be part of supply chains and provide women with access to technology, health services, finance and marketing.
